Advantages: hmmm lots of songs
Disadvantages: disc three
Well, it looks pretty tasteful from first glimse at the cover artwork. Some clipart images of women dancing. Just three women, so must be one heck of a party they've gone to! Billed as 'The Greatest Ever Party,' let us see if that is actually true...
Spread over three discs and comprising 54 tracks, you do get a lot for your money. The first disc has a strong disco flavour, as Kool and The Gang do the overplayed 'Celebration'. I cringe at this, as it is the kind of song which is supposed to make people get up and go 'woh, Im so happy! Let's all have a party guys.' No thanks.
'Car Wash' is passable, though it drags and could have been trimmed by about thrity seconds, as could 'Lady Marmalade,' which is plodding and laborious to the extreme.
Some light relief can be found in the Pointer Sisters and Shalamar who succeed in providing two bonafide disco classics which do stand up to repeated listening.
Disc two continues, but takes us on a dancier route, as Blackbox power through with 'Ride On Time.' Holloway's much sampled vocals really lift the track. A bizarre appearance from reggae duo Chaka Demus and Pliers, who seem to have been licenced to every compilation album of late. 'Tease Me' has strong Carribean vibes and a good groove. Things nosedive swiftly though, as Black Lace and Lulu crop up. If these were played at my party, I would sue. Luckily, old timer Tom Jones raises the game with the impossibly silly 'It's Not Unusual.'
Disc three sadly brings out all the dance routine songs. So you can do 'The Macarena', which seems easy but always confuses at least one thick woman. Las Ketchup appear with their one hit wonder, before that wretched 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' track arrives from nowhere. The song is vile, with naff vocals and it makes my skin crawl. There is no salvation on the third disc and 'Seven Tears' by the Goombay Dance Band is the final nail in the coffin.
Greatest Ever Party? Tell me who would want these songs at a party then check their hearing.
Summary: dire
