      The Boss and friends best-ish

Ask anyone to name a single favourite of theirs in any category and the response will be a variation on a theme. They can't do it, so spare a thought for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. This compilation CD titled 'Greatest Hits' gives us 18 tracks spanning the years since they first collaborated in 1972.

This CD can be seen in one of two ways, for fans like me, it is a light reminder of all the classics. Something to pop in the CD player, close your eyes and revisit scenes of live gigs before. For those who have yet to sample the delights of New Jersey's finest, and apparently there are one or two, this CD represents an essential introduction. Take a look at the track listing and see which ones you recognise:-

      1."Blinded by the Light''
      3."Born to Run"
      4."Thunder Road''
6."Darkness on the Edge of Town"
      7."Hungry Heart"
      8."The River"
      9."Born in the U.S.A."
      10."I'm on Fire"
      11."Glory Days"
      12."Dancing in the Dark"
      13."The Rising"
      14."Lonesome Day"
      15."Radio Nowhere"
      16."Long Walk Home"
      17."Because the Night"

Classics one and all, some would argue for the inclusions of other songs ahead of those chosen but that is going to come down to personal choice. Perhaps for a greater selection there is the 2003 release 'The Essential Bruce Springsteen' which was a 3CD release containing all but one of these singles, 'Radio Nowhere' which had yet to be released. This CD spans 1972-1984 and 2002-2007, the periods when they played together.

The beauty of this release is that the European version contains 18 tracks opposed to the US release which has only 12. The strength of the album is that while it may be regarded as a rock album, it carefully infuses other styles such as folk, blues even country &western, all without any fuss. I thought I had no interest in country & western but such is the manner in which Springsteen uses it, it has set me thinking.

But even after all, for standout tracks, I can't really look beyond two classics. They define the term; they are of course 'Born in the USA' and 'Born to Run'. You either love these two or you haven't heard them, and if not you are in for a treat. 'Born to Run ' performed live is spine tingling, take a look at the 2009 Superbowl XLIII half time show on YouTube for an idea.

So there we have it, a CD full of songs I already own at least twice over. And yet I still love it. Definitely an idea for Christmas for all the men of a certain age out there, and even for those who are not. It could have only been improved with a DVD of live footage, I guess I'll just have to buy London Calling!!
