The Cure are a band who have had a great influence on the music scene. They have evolved with time, and I am fond of them because they skillfully experiment with styles, which I suppose is to be expected of a group whose career spans over a 20-something period. They have written some incredibly uplifting pop songs, although they are generally stamped with the 'goth' tag, which the band themselves dislike; understandably so, considering the fact they are the masters of the pop-song. Musically, they are a spectrum; they can be as light or as dark, as happy or as sad as they want. They are experimental and unexpected, yet the songs they make always feel so familiar, and ... Christmas is nearly here and as usual its time to duck for cover as a cacophony of assorted greatest hits packages arrive and fly off the shelves in preparation for the big day. The appeal of these singles collections is simple enough, allowing the more casual fan access to a band or artists backcatalogue on one handy disc, whilst giving the more obsessive of us to make that in car CD choice so much simpler; why spend agonising over which album to take when you can have all the singles at once? This year is notable for the large number of ‘alternative’ artists who have succumbed to the festive spirit of money making. Over the last few months we have seen ... Read the complete review

Crawley's The Cure are without a doubt one of the most respected post-punk bands still in existence. The roughly sketched and smudged Marilyn Manson prototype of frontman Robert Smith and friends have been making goth tinged indie-pop for over two decades now. The Cure's simply titled 'Greatest Hits' collects nineteen (well my cd-wow copy has 18) top Cure songs, mostly popular songs and singles in chronological order. Limited edition copies feature a bonus disc of 18 modern acoustic versions of the same songs; some of which sound better than some of the original recordings. More of an incentive for veteran Cure fans I'm sure, along with the ... Read the complete review

Being the impressionable 21-year old, I'm always keen to find new music to add to my collection or taste. But sometimes it helps to go back a few years as well.... A couple of years ago, if you'd have asked me to name a couple of Cure songs, I'd have said "what?" and the closest I'd be able to come is say "isn't their lead singer a bit 'eccentric' for an old man?".... However, upon a visit to the iTunes store and typing in 'The Cure', I recognised the first 6 songs on offer. How is that so? Well, I thought maybe it would be because Robert Smith & co have been doing rather well off royalty money from adverts/theme tunes/backing music in ... Read the complete review

Also posted on ReviewCentre.com under my username of "coldrunner": This compilation was a great start line for any novice Cure fan. Greatest Hits was simply made for the newcomers to Robert Smith's perennial music. Once again, these five British geniuses, slightly misunderstood, have created a highly innovational, effulgent page turner. The lighter side of Goth is represented here, to the liking of many, but probably not so much for the more intense fan who lives in the gloom-dipped, sombre moments of earlier releases. More well known songs are picked out, with up most care. From the zestfully enthusiastic 'Why Can't I Be You' to the ... Read the complete review
