Advantages: The first eleven tracks

Disadvantages: The last seven tracks!

I don't know anyone of my generation who has never heard of the Cure, and a good few of them own this album! However Robert Smith and his band have been relatively anonymous since the start of the milennium, so it would be easy for the youth of today to be unacquainted with their music. If you are one of those people, this is a great place to start to get to know them. For me there are simply no poor tracks amongst the first eleven which appear on this compilation. I find it almost impossible to choose a favourite, and it is so dependent on mood - if you want to jump around, 'Why Can't I Be You?' is a fantastic option, and if you are feeling a bit more chilled and reflective, 'The Caterpillar' hits the spot. Music for every moment in my opinion, and rounded off by 'Love Song', for me by a short head their finest hour, beautiful indeed.

And then my interest wanes, and never really returns. 'Pictures of You', 'Never Enough' and 'High' are just ok, 'Friday I'm In Love' is just plain irritating, and the collection rather limps to its climax with four more relatively forgettable offerings. Maybe a lot of this is to do with the time of my life when I was really into the Cure, but I can't help feeling that there really was little left in the tank after the release of 'Disintegration' in 1989, although 'Wish' still managed to be one of the band's most commercially successful albums when it was released in 1992. However there is still enough on this compliation to make it worthy of adding to your collection if you have little knowledge of The Cure, especially given its low price tag!

Summary: Still well worth buying for less than a fiver!

I don't think that The Cure ever truly lost their way. Sure, they had albums which failed to be a complete success (Wild Mood Swings), but doesn't every band?

In my opinion The Cure are at their best when writing beautiful epics, with wonderful musicianship, a la Disintegration and Bloodflowers!
