Advantages: loads of hits
Disadvantages: 1 or 2 lesser songs
The image of this front cover has always alarmed me. Annie Lennox looks like a mannequin and only half of Dave Stewart made it onto the sleeve. Cover artwork aside, this is a fine collection of some of their biggest ever hits.
Who are they:
Scottish vocalist Annie Lennox and songwriter/producer Dave Stewart found fame in the eighties. Annie has had a successful solo career too.
On this album:
'Love Is A Starnger' kicks things off. I never liked this song, finding the melody too creepy and her vocals shadowy and sinister. Maybe it is the synths which add to the eerie feel here. I am more drawn to 'Sweet Dreams' which has one of the most recognisable synth riffs in music history, much sampled, never bettered. The track is quite dark and brooding yet has a dancey streak running through it too.
Highlights:
I love the jaunty rhythm of 'Right By Your Side' which always makes me think of the Carribean. I also rate 'Thorn In My Side' which is an upbeat classy pop workout, finding Lennox on fine form. She sounds more bright and cheerful here than she does on a lot of the other songs. Also check out the haunting 'You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart' which is not one of the more widely discussed songs. Gentle vocals and a restrained melody leave you feeling lightheaded, as Lennox's breathy vocals sweep over you.
Avoid:
'It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)' always sounded flat vocally, lacking the finesse of the other songs.
Overall:
An eighteen track album is not be argued with. It is crammed with hits and you will see the memories come flooding back. Lennox's angelic voice and Stewart's synths work brilliantly and this is a worthy purchase
Summary: wonderful
