Advantages: A great collection of some of the bands best material
Disadvantages: Everyone will have an opinion on tracks that could have made it
It's an album that's been 15 years in the making but this week saw the release of the first Greatest Hits collection from the Foo Fighters. Since the split of Nirvana, Dave Grohl has taken on many projects but the Foo Fighters are perhaps the one he will be most remembered for. Rather than being an end for the band thankfully this greatest hits collection is just satisfying part of their record deal and the band will be back recording new material in the future. One look at the track listing shows that they have put some real thought into the run order and with the addition of a couple of new tracks this album is perhaps the best mix of tracks from the bands back catalogue.
That is something of a rarity when it comes to greatest hit albums as normally there are a few dodgy choices but this seems to be the best showcase of what the band are all about. Former in 1994 after the death of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, the Foo Fighters have grown from a solo project by front man Dave Grohl to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world. It's been quite a journey with various different styles and approaches to each album but this greatest hits collection really captures the bands sound over all 15 years and puts it together in a very well thought-out order.
For most Foo Fighters fans I'm sure their CD collection or I Tunes playlists will include what they consider to be their favourite tracks by the band. I was amazed listening to this album just how many of the tracks on this album formed a part of my own favourite tracks by the band. There is an excellent mixture of the faster, louder and more upbeat tracks as well as the mellower sounding moments that Grohl seems to be able to write with such alarming talent.
Over the years the band have developed there sound and I would say there is a very unique edge to their music. The leading guitar riffs take the lead on just about every track and compliment Grohl's vocals perfectly. While on the drums Taylor Hawkins does a perfect job of creating a solid beat to accompany each and every track. The combination on this album is of course a selection of tracks from each album but it's easy to see that Grohl has stuck to his ethos throughout each of the bands past albums.
If there is one thing that Dave Grohl has proved equally adept at over the years it's producing excellent sing a long tracks. Each song on this album from the older material to the two new songs written for this album have a really catchy edge to them. Having been a Foo Fighters fan from just about the start this for me is the perfect collection of tracks from the album opener "All My Life" to the final track, an acoustic version of my favourite track "Everlong".
The new tracks on the album offer something a little different again and current single "Wheels" sees the band take another slight change in direction. The track has obvious influences from artists such as Tom Petty, which once again revolutionises the bands already growing repertoire of tracks and sound. I think there is something in this album for everyone. Obviously fans of the band are going to love this collection of tracks as they are arguably the bands best material to date.
It's that reason that will also make the album appeal to someone who isn't quite sure if the Foo Fighters are there kind of band. I really feel that this album is the perfect snapshot of what the band are about and will provide a good introduction for anyone who wants to give them a try. the combination of tracks was handpicked by the band themselves and I think with the running order they've created, mixing up the tracks from various albums, works really well. Of course the old debate about greatest hits albums for fans is always applicable I feel that whether you're a fan of the band already or have heard a few of their songs and fancy giving them a try this is a must own album.
