... there is at least one stunning Welsh hip hop act. Goldie Lookin Chain's Best of album is a quality tongue-in-cheek look at chav culture in the south Welsh town of Newport. The group roar through the mainstay subjects of hip hop such as guns, weed smoking and gangsters, whilst throwing in some more intriguing topics such as the song about band member Eggsy who believes he is half man, half robot and awkwardly bumps his way down the street to go and buy cigarettes. The lyrics are as funny as they come and backed up by...more

Premium Review Greatest Hits - Goldie Lookin Chain: Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do (525 words)

You may remember a couple of years back there was a Welsh band emerge under the name of Goldie Lookin Chain. They released this 'Greatest Hits' album in 2004, their first major label release and an album that included tracks from a number of their self-released albums between the years of 2001 and 2003. Goldie Lookin Chain produce satiric hip hop music based around 'chav' culture in their home town of Newport, South Wales and followed this 'Greatest Hits' release with the 'Safe As F**k' album in 2005. They have a third major label album set for release at some stage in 2008 and only time will tell as to what the band will have to offer with their third commercial ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Welsh rap - why not? (367 words)

The much maligned genre of hip hop has become rather stale commercially but that's not to say that there hasn't been numerous talented groups to have emerged over the last years. When hip hop is good, it's really good and these Welsh chaps definitely managed to put their unique spin on the style of music. Goldie Lookin Chain's debut album cunningly called Greatest Hits is a fine example of music. The Welsh, Scots and Irish have a natural talent for story telling, their intonation and ability to make trivial things sound riveting and humorous is an art. Therefore it should come to as no surprise that there is at least one stunning Welsh hip hop act. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Greatest Hits - Goldie Lookin Chain: A fun album (155 words)

goldie lookin chain; greatest hits is a great collection of songs from their first albums. It contains some amazing songs such as "Soapbar" and "half man, half machine". The songs are humourous but are also really good! The music is rap/ hip hop and has some pretty good beats. I know pretty much every word to some songs but there are some bits i can't get. That's why it's such a downside that the lyrics arn't printed inside the booklet. Instead, you get a series of photographs. However, excluding the lyrics thing, the album is great and i wouldn't regard it as novelty music. I could listen to this album over and over again, and much to the annoyance ...  Read the complete review

When I first heard the single "Guns don't kill people, Rappers do", I wondered if these guys were for real, I had to listen to see if they were being serious or if they were just taking the p**s, it took me just a few seconds to reach the conclusion, these guys are hilarious!! Goldie Lookin Chain's debut album, the misleadingly titled "Greatest Hits" is just one long amusing tribute to gun culture, hip hop and life on the mean streets of.............Newport!! "Greatest Hits" is a tongue-in-cheek rap album packed with references to gangstas, guns, drugs, making love to fridges, sex changes and all things Welsh. If you ...  Read the complete review
