Advantages: Some greatly amusing tracks, fun lyrics.

Disadvantages: Not everyone will appreciate the humour.

You may remember a couple of years back there was a Welsh band emerge under the name of Goldie Lookin Chain. They released this 'Greatest Hits' album in 2004, their first major label release and an album that included tracks from a number of their self-released albums between the years of 2001 and 2003. Goldie Lookin Chain produce satiric hip hop music based around 'chav' culture in their home town of Newport, South Wales and followed this 'Greatest Hits' release with the 'Safe As F**k' album in 2005. They have a third major label album set for release at some stage in 2008 and only time will tell as to what the band will have to offer with their third commercial release.

Off the back of this album the band had a number of hit singles including the hugely successful 'Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do', and also the track 'Your Mother's Got a Penis'. This album contains some greatly amusing material and in 'Greatest Hits' the band frequently use Welsh terms such as 'clart' and other such expressions including 'you knows it'. The music is great fun to listen to and never can you take the band seriously as they progress their way through this album. It is no surprise that 'Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do' performed so well in the UK charts in reaching number 3; it's a hugely amusing track with a suitably humorous video to suit. If you have ever seen the video for the track then you'll know exactly what I mean, the band ride around as a gang on customised mobility scooters and it's just totally bizarre. I laugh every time I see this video and to be quite honest with you it sums up the band perfectly.

A lot of the music on this album is focussed on drug culture, and with titles to their tracks such as '21 Ounces' and 'Soap Bar' this should really come as no surprise. The band use a number of colloquial terms for marijuana throughout this album, you really get the impression that this bunch of Welsh lads are just out to have as much fun as possible in life without ever really caring about the consequences. Never are the tracks at all serious, and always Goldie Lookin Chain amuse during the duration of this 'Greatest Hits' album.

You need a sense of humour to listen to the music of Goldie Lookin Chain, and whilst not everyone will appreciate this band there will be plenty out there that find the bands music greatly amusing for sure. As long as you don't listen to this band expecting them to be a serious hip hop band then all is well and good, there's nothing serious about Goldie Lookin Chain; it's just fun music which provides great entertainment to listen to and there's simply nothing more to it. If this sounds like it may well be your sort of thing then give Goldie Lookin Chain a listen, it's an acquired taste for sure but I personally am a huge fan of the GLC.
