This is the first proper Neil Young compilation album since 1978's 'Decade', & while many of the tracks are found on that earlier release, this is certainly a more concise offering. Spanning just a single disc, it includes everything that a non-fan would expect, but doesn't quite encompass his career up to the point, as 'Decade' so beautifully did. The 16 tracks were apparently selected based on radio airplay, original record sales & known download history, & I guess it includes his better known & most popular periods. Normally, a 'Greatest Hits' album serves as a good introduction to a particular artist or group, although it will frequently only showcase selected tracks which have enjoyed commercial success. In the past I have found that many of my favourite songs are ultimately left off these 'best of' compilations in favour of the easy-listening and crowd-pleasing numbers which have charted well - but is this the case with 'Neil Young: Greatest Hits'?, an album specifically focussing on the Canadian rocker's solo years from '69 to '92, representing his third 'best of' after 'Decade' and 'Lucky Thirteen'.
