Advantages: Catchy pop tracks

Disadvantages: Not enough new material and extras

The Spice Girls are probably up there with the likes of Elvis, Madonna, The Beatles and good old Sir Cliff to name a few. Why you ask? Well regardless of whether you love or hate them their impact on the music scene was massive throughout the late 90s their slogan 'Girl power' and their catchy, pop tunes dominated charts across the world. The impact this one band seemed to have on millions of people was huge, I myself first heard about them when the video to debut hit 'Wannabe' was played on The Box 10 times in the space of an hour.

Melanie C, Emma Bunton Melanie B and of course Victoria Beckham soldiered on after the departure of Geri Halliwell in 1998 though finally called it a day in early 2001 however after years of rumours and supposed reunions the girls finally got back together in late 2007 to release their long awaited Greatest Hits and to complete a world wide tour.

The greatest hits itself [the cover being a classic nod to their debut release 'Spice'] combines all of their greatest hits as well as a few extras and whilst the initial tracklist is full of pop classics it's a bit disappointing that there wasn't more new tracks or any exclusive recordings added to the CD. The tracks themselves offer quirky, strong, confident lyrics and catchy melodies that will no doubt still be firmly lodged in your head from the first time around. With highlights being 'Wannabe' with its absurd but wonderful 'Zig-a-zig-ah' to the passionate and beautiful tone of '2 Become 1', the ode to the girl's mothers in 'Mama' and the more RNB influenced sound of 'Holler' there's something here to satisfy most hardcore pop fans and even a 'Spiceworld' album track 'Move Over' thrown in for good measure.

Though each track on here from the girls golden days is undoubtedly a winner in its own right the main attention of the record was the new single 'Headlines [Friendship Never Ends]'. Sounding like a traditional Spice ballad the song doesn't really show any progression for the group from the time of their split and even other new track 'Voodoo' which is an attempt at a more upbeat style of sound clearly reflects that the Spice Girls time is up and sounds outdated compared to the current girl group heavyweights Girls Aloud and Sugababes.

Whilst the CD will obviously appeal to die hard fans and people wanting to gather all the girls' hits together there's not really anything groundbreaking here that you won't find on their other 3 studio albums, though it was a great experience for me upon first listen to remember the days when I used to obsess over them with my friends and all the memories each of the songs unlocked the Spice Girls really do seem to be stuck behind in time rather than making any leap forward.

Summary: Will make you remember why you loved them in the first place, a real blast from the past
