Advantages: Early years the best

Disadvantages: Weak ending

Squeeze are a band I came across when their best hits were a long way behind them and as such I was sort of playing catch up, of former boyfriend introduced me to them, literally in the sense of singer Glen Tilbrook many moons ago one night in a bar in London. There is a chance they may be writing some new stuff for this year but such rumours have done the rounds before.

1 Take Me I'm Yours
2 Goodbye Girl
3 Cool For Cats
4 Up The Junction
5 Slap & Tickle
6 Another Nail In My Heart
7 Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)
8 Tempted
9 Is That Love?
10 Labelled With Love
11 Black Coffee In Bed
12 Annie Get Your Gun
13 King George Street
14 Last Time Forever
15 No Place Like Home
16 Hourglass
17 Trust Me To Open My Mouth
18 Footprints
19 If It's Love
20 Love Circles

A greatest hits album was a good buy for me rather than ploughing through their back catalogue and this one is very comprehensive with 20 tracks on it, much of their most successful musi and the ones I like are packed towards the beginning of the album, there music would be classified I guess as indie rock and punk and certainly there are some great anthems and ballads on this album.

The stand out for me has always been Up the Junction as it is such a well written and constructed record with the gravelly voiced lyrics in it, I'm less of a fan of the more quirky and jokey Cool for Cats which I would almost classify as a joke song. The album has a strong star with the thumpingly good Take me I'm Yours which has a strong driven beat to it and some strong vocals. It was these early years when the band featured Jools Holland that the best work was done.

Unfortunately from about track thirteen onwars the album takes a bit of a nose dive really and the songs become a bit samey without the punch or passion of their earlier work, a sign of a band becomming less unified and perhaps less motivated to do music together. Stil the first 13 tracks justify an album in themselves so you can perhaps forgive the weaker later songs.

Summary: Greatest Hits
