by XICripZ - written on 09/02/09 (Very useful, 67 readings)
Rating:
himself to simply display what he can do as a Turntablist, and he comes up ith the goods as he takes on samples of his biggest influences: Kool & The Gang (for the funky Jazz), Eric B & Rakim (for their groundbreaking "Paid In Full), and DJ Grand Wizard Theodore (who pioneered the scratch). Four Stars 7. "Positivity" (Remix) This is a big improvemnt on the originall recording (which is found at the end of the album) as it gets a much more uplifting chorus, in which DJ Primo takes on additional samples, and this was exactly waht was need to take the first version of it to a greater level of effectiveness. Rating:
DJ Premier and the Guru have been at the forefront of the underground for ten years now, and this retrospective shows why hip hop headz will always acknowledge their genius. The album opens with a live tribute to the late, great Big L, and then blasts in with "BIG L REST IN PEACE". "Full Clip" is a new track, and is a tune that you will never bore of. "Discipline", featuring Total, provides swirling harps and more R+B rhythms. If that's your kind of thing, check out "Royalty", with KC and Jo-Jo, an epic song. "Jazz Thing" is Gangstarr's homage to the greats of the genre, with a swipe at those who think they know what jazz is. ...

Rating:
The Hip Hop duo Gang Starr released "Step In The Arena" in 1991. It was the second album from DJ Premier and Guru and it finds that just as on their debut, you get Primo taking full control of the beats and scratching whilst Keithy E. Guru gets the job done with the rhymes to show what the East Coast underground had to say following a up-rise of the West Coast. 1. "Name Tag" (Intro) 2. "Step In The Arena" The titular track to the album is one which really hypes things up, and I felt as though it was used perfectly in order o get the thing going as you see that ff one of the most memorable hooks, you hear that Guru takes things in the way ...
