Advantages: Little By Little
Disadvantages: Filler track
I was a massive Oasis fan in the mid 90's, but then I started to miss the point of what they were doing when they become more about their image and antics than about the music. I felt that they craved the press attention more than wanting to release good quality music. They were no longer the darlings of the music critics, and even their fan base was not what it once was. Would their fifth release prove to be the one that made me revert to my original opinion of them? ***HINDU TIMES*** For me, the best piece of music the band have released since 'What's The Story'. This is Oasis at their rock 'n' roll best, and the rest of the album is up to the standard of this opening track then we as listeners are in for a treat. It reminds me a lot of the music they released in the the mid 90's. The lyrics, guitar riffs and Liam's sneering vocals are back to the standard which made me like them in the first place. Instantly likeable, instantly memorable, and an instant hit. ***FORCE OF NATURE*** I have read a lot of reviews of this album, and one thing that sticks out in a lot of them is the continuous criticism of Noel's vocals in comparison to Liam's. I have to disagree with these criticisms (compare Wonderwall when Noel sings it as opposed to Liam and you will see what I mean). I do not mean that Noel is a better vocalist, he is just different, but certainly not poorer. All that said, this track is by no means anywhere near being the best on the album. It is just nothing new, and too many mixed styles (glam rock, rock n roll, folk) to be a winner. It is rumoured to be a song about Noel's ex wife Meg Matthews and her frivolous spending, but that was nevr confirmed. ***HUNG IN A BAD PLACE*** This track is confirmation that the Brothers Gallagher have released that simple is best, and they have returned to the rock n roll feel of their debut release Definitely Maybe, and I am sure that this was th
e brief Gem Archer worked to when he wrote it. Finally they have released that there is no need to fix something that was never broken in the first place. It is a track which is heavy on drums and guitar solos, and Liam's attitude just suits the lyrics perfectly. ***STOP CRYING YOUR HEART OUT*** Every album needs an anthem, and here it is for this album. It is a slow song with dramatic drums and string arrangement, coupled with Liam on lead vocals interspersed with Noel answering his questions on backing vocals. Too cheesy and middle of the road for a lot of fans, but for me this is certainly one of the high points of this album, and is certainly instrumental in my change of heart where the band are concerned. They are back to their best, and it is about time! ***SONGBIRD*** There has been so much publicity surrounding this track as it was written by Liam. Some critics have even gone so far to say that it is Liam's debut solo release!!! Liam wrote this track as a tribute to his latest love and mother of his second son Gene, and in case her name has slipped your mind it is Nicole Appleton, she of All Saints fame. I hate it with a passion, and I think it is the weakest song they have ever released, and how it ever got to Number 1 is beyond me! Simple is good, but this is just too simple, Liam's voice is just not suited to sitting alone with no musical arrangement to back him up, and it just does not make me want to really listen to it. It is little more than irritating background music which has been over hyped by Liam and his merry band of hangers on. ***LITTLE BY LITTLE*** Another gem of a track, and it rivals 'Stop Crying' as the best track on the album, and it proves that Noel is up there in terms of vocals. If you do not own this album, then buy it now, even if it is just for this track alone. Everything musically on this track is subtle and no single element shines through, they just all mesh together so
well. The lyrics are brilliant and they stick in your head from the first listen. It is a mellow track with a belting chorus. The whole track is just magical, I cannot think of any other way to explain it. ***A QUICK PEEP*** Filler track alert!!!!! Not a nice middle section, purely a track to fill some time when there was never any need to. What a waste, and this is the kind of thing which makes you wonder what their intentions are. ***(PROBABLY) IN THE MIND*** Another Beatles influenced track, but this time there is less Oasis and more Beatles. The vocals are inferior and the guitars are woefully below the standard we have come to expect from the band. It is too repetitive to be a winner in my eyes, but those fans who loved the similarities in the two bands will love this song immediately. I am sure it will never be released as a single though. ***SHE IS LOVE*** A controversial song when it was released, as Noel wrote it for his girlfriend Sara MacDonald, but when it was scheduled for release they had split up (although they have since reconciled), and Noel was very vocal that he did not want Sara to go through anymore hurt because of him. It is a nice enough track (although heavy on the Beatles influence again) and once again Noel puts in a strong vocal performance, but be under no illusions, this is no Wonderwall. ***BORN UNDER A DIFFERENT CLOUD*** Another track which has a definite and obvious Beatles (Hey Jude style) influence, and it is only Liam's vocals which stop this being a blatant rip off. Liam wrote this track and although it is much better than 'Songbird' it is nowhere near the lyrical standard that Noel has set since the day they came onto the scene. ***BETTER MAN*** A lovely bonus track (which you have to wait a while for), which I can imagine is a real knockout when it is played live as the guitars are outstanding. The third track written by Liam, and certainly the stronge
st, but shamefully many listeners may not hear it as it is pretty well hidden and many may not even be aware of it's existence. What do I think then? Overall, I think this is a strong album, and if it was released by another group if would receive much more critical acclaim that it has. I do like it, and I would say that it has rewoken my interest in the band, and I am sure I am not alone. The singles they have released so far will appeal to a whole new audience, and I feel that the credibility they had in 1995-6 is back as strong as ever.
