Advantages: Will have you air-guitaring all over your bedroom
Disadvantages: Don't let your mother hear 'She's Got Balls'
The early incarnation of AC/DC were my favourite. I only really became a fan about 5 or 6 years ago, but you can imagine what people must have thought when they first heard this, their debut international album which came out in 1976.
High Voltage contains some of their best songs, hard rock balls-out standards that still pack a huge punch today over thirty years later.
The riffs that build each song to such a crecendo are the signature sound of 'DC. Each song yes are simlar in style, but are deceptively simple. Each riff different to the last are instantly memorable and classic. AC/DC come across as a mix of The Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones and Led Zepelin all mixed into one with some of the most ferrocious songs ever committed to vinyl.
The lyrics are also excellent. From the rock and roll lifestyle of 'It's a Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll) and Rock 'n' Roll Singer to thw 'single entendre of 'Big Balls'.
It's Bon Scott however who staels the show. As the bands first lead singer, its his delivery of the songs that give that dirty and sleazy sound - the sort of man not to be left alone with your wife and daughter! "Lock up your daughter, lock up your wife, lock up your back door," Ahem!
High Voltage is the album that if you stuck it on at a party and absolutely everybody would get up on the dancefloor and start doing their best 'Angus' air guitaring all over the place.
High Voltahe and it's successor, 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap' are perhaps my favourite AC/DC albums and still sound fantastic today - especially the new digitally remastered versions.
Summary: An excellent debut from 'DC
