Advantages: Lots of big tunes
Disadvantages: Little variation
"Highway To Hell" was released in 1979 and came as the sixth album from the Australian Hard Rock band AC/DC. It came as the album prior to the release of "Back In Black" (the second highest-selling album of all-time) and this final seventies record from the band was also the last to feature Bon Scott on lead vocals, as his death came about a year after it came out.
1. "Highway To Hell"
The album begins with the titular song to the album and I would say that it was a great way to get things started as they get down with one of their most well-known singles and make a massive impact to hype you up for the album with a mixture of the roaring vocals from Scott in addition to a heavy kick drum set allowing them to really make an impression and force you to take notice of what they are coming with here.
**Four Stars**
2. "Girls Got Rhythm"
The album progresses with them laying down another of the popular singles, and I felt that it was a nice way to ease you in. You find that there is a similar percussion pattern through this one, but made to take on a higher tempo to show some advancement from them as they get down to things and they really just have fun with it by laying down a party jam for all to just enjoy as they provide general eel-good music.
**Four Stars**
3. "Walk All Over You"
There seems to be a significant shift in the way that the music is composed as with this one you find that they twist things a fair bit by taking the time to build it up here in order to give you some sort of opportunity to adjust to the changes, which initially seem quite dark, but as they progress it seems to turn towards a much more energetic display from them, until they find an effective balance of these by the time the chorus kicks in.
**Four Stars**
4. "Touch Too Much"
They lay down what was their final single from this album here, and for this one they are seen to take the music towards a place where I wasn't really that interested in engaging with as it seems to escape the sort of things which brought me in with earlier tunes. I can see the appeal in it, as it does take on a form which works well off those which came before it, but it just wasn't to my tastes and seemed to push me out.
**Two Stars**
5. "Beating Around The Bush"
With this one they are seen to get Angus Young experimenting with his guitaring in order to come up with a suitable riff to fit in with the sorts o thing which they get into for this song, and it appears t be just perfect here as together they come up with what I would consider to be the best from the album as they get down to a high-tempo offering where they just get loose with it and throw together a track which you would find impossible to complain about.
**Five Stars**
6. "Shot Down In Flames"
The sorts of things which were found at the very early stages of the album are seen to return with this one and I felt that this was a positive for the album as it brings you back to the top quality of the release where you are made to connect with the music due to its high energy levels and the way that it is made to be accessible to all. It is a raw recording from them and one which stands as a powerfully strong one within the album.
**Four Stars**
7. "Get It Hot"
This short one is one which gets them getting back into the party mood and so once again you find that they have made one which carries a universal message along with it and keeps you feeling as if you are a part of what they do here. It is a nice one and in spite of its length, it appears to do pretty much all that you would expect a song from them to (based upon what else is found on this release). I would have to say that it doesn't stand out as others do, and this may hold it back slightly.
**Three Stars**
8. "If You Want Blood"
The high standard is seen to persist through with this one as they perform a song, in which they are able to make a big impact with the ay that they apparently surprise you with a burst of life to get you to once again get livened up for their material and what they have to offer with this 1979 album. It is a rough one from them and appears to reflect the sort of things which you tend to expect from the Hard Rock group.
**Four Stars**
9. "Love Hungry Man"
This one gets them moving away from the sort of thing which has been seen to domain the album up to this point in order to show more diversity within their capabilities and I felt that this was exactly what you got as on this one they lay down a powerful bluesy recording which (as far as Cliff Williams' bass guitar goes) appears to bring in a little Funk to the mix and pull out something much more raw and alternative from them to a strong effect.
**Four Stars**
10. "Night Prowler"
The album ends on a dark one where they are seen to perform a lengthy song which appears to have much more depth to it than the rest of what the album has to offer as they bring the tempo right down to create a song which can be taken in many ways as they create an ominous atmosphere for a song which seems to take you right into the situation and make you act out the role that Scott sings about.
**Four Stars**
I felt that this was clearly a strong album from the band and one which gets them working at a very high standard. I would however have to say that there is clearly a lack of variation to prevent it from being that well-rounded and a couple of tunes don't quite keep things rolling. On the whole it is one which needs a listen.
Summary: AC/DC's sixth album
