... (although what pop music isn't based around such things) I much prefer this to the bands big seller, Different Class. The songs belt along with a disco pop kitsch that gets beneath your skin. The lyrics are based around sex, but they are gritty, real and funny - a lot more true to life than Kylie or Prince or anything like that. Most of the songs have really stood the test of time - Babies and Do you Remember the First Time still being played in Indie Clubs today. Above all, it's a very refreshing album, and a...more

Premium Review His 'n' Hers - Pulp: An album about Sex, relationships, and erm Lipgloss (1315 words)

The first Pulp album that got them the sort of critical acclaim that they were starting to deserve. The first albums IT, Masters of the Universe, Freaks, etc were all good in parts though failed to be consistent. The pick of the songs from the earlier Pulp albums is available to buy on a Double CD called Countdown. I will review that at a later date. His ‘N’ Hers Joyriders is a decent start to the album, he is singing about wanting a car so that he can take a girl to the reservoir. The lyrics indicate that they are a gang that enjoy causing trouble. Does the gang, wish to take the girl to the reservoir as it is a spot for making ...  Read the complete review

This was Pulps last album before the world opened it’s eyes one morning and saw Jarvis Cocker gyrating in a shopping trolley. Jarvis wasn’t really in a shopping trolley of course, it was merely the video for Common People, the song that announced Pulp and their impending album, Different Class to the world. In my opinion though, this collection of bitter sweet stories backed by acrylic synths and guitars and crooned by the ever distinctive Jarvis Cocker. Apart from this being a very good album it is quite important, as my music collection goes. As it is… (Drum roll) the first CD I ever bought! That’s right, prior to buying this album in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review His 'n' Hers - Pulp: 2nd best pulp! (195 words)

This is nearly as good as Different Class, that sums it up really but I better go on. I bought this after I got Different Class, mainly because I was waiting for 'This is Hardcore' to come out but I didn't like the singles I heard from it, so I decided to get this. I remembered liking the track 'Do you remember the first time?' from hearing it on the radio years ago, what I didnt expect was for the rest to be so good, I remembered 'Babies' as soon as I heard it and I still dont know why I didn't buy it first time around, just a fantastic track. Of the other tracks 'Lipgloss' really stands out, the rest of the tracks are not quite ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The great lost Pulp album... (510 words)

Pulp's first studio album on a major label runs Different Class and This Is Hardcore very close in the race to be the definitive Pulp record. Not perfect by any means, but stuffed to the over-starched collars with some of the best material they've ever done. First thing that hits me going back to it is just how good a compilation of Pulp's best songs could be - imagine a side one of Joyriders, Lipgloss, Have You Seen Her Lately?, Babies, She's A Lady, Do You Remember The First Time...all classic stuff. A couple of the more racy (nay, filthy) tracks in hindsight aren't quite as good as I remember them (Acrylic Afternoons and Pink Glove), while ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review His 'n' Hers - Pulp: tales from suburbia (226 words)

If you like pulp, make sure you own this album! After having purchased as much pulp as i can, I must say 'His & Hers' stands out because all the songs are excellent, with the rather meandering exception of 'David's Last Summer'. She's a Lady takes you to the height of that classic pulp trademark, the extended intro, and delves into the depths of paranoia, somewhat like 'f.e.e.l.i.n.g.c.a.l.l.e.d.l.o.v.e.' 'Do you Remember the 1st time' and 'Babies' are excellent singles, but the rest of the album is pure angel delight for anyone who likes clever lyrics, a bit of seedy glamour and catchy hooklines. ...  Read the complete review
