The History
A lot of people out there will have probably only of heard of Kid Rock just recently thanks to his cracking number 1 hit 'All Summer Long'. Either that or they are probably like, Kid Rock? isn't that the guy who was with Pamela Anderson? Well reality check time because if like me you have followed Kid Rock throughout the last decade then your opinion would have been more like, Pamela Anderson? oh yeah that's the chick from Baywatch who is with Kid Rock.
Kid Rock born Robert James Ritchie in 1971 has believe it or not sold over 24 million albums. His first real breakthrough came with the release of 'Devil Without a Cause' album. Early on in his career he was dropped from record companies but still stood tall and came back stronger. He is well known for his different styles of music mixing rap, rock and hip hop. He sings about his up bringing and a lot about how life screwed him over yet he still here standing selling multiple platinum albums so its his turn to give the finger back to the world. He has even made many appearances in TV shows including South Park and The Simpsons and played a leading role in the 2003 movie Biker Boyz.
The Album
On to the album itself which was released in 2000 and showed the world that he wasn't just a one trick pony and that his previous album 'Devil without a cause' wasn't just a fluke.

The Track List
Track 1
Intro - Not much going on here in terms of a track itself but basically a shot intro of Kid talking about his life and the things he has faced growing up and getting to where he is at.
Track 2
American Bad Ass - One of my all time favourite tracks from Kid Rock. This song has it all and is basically Kid telling everyone how the whole world doubted him and never thought he would make it and how he proved them wrong after several years later when he went platinum seven times with his album 'Devil without a cause'. This song comprises of Kid Rock saying how he gave the finger to his school days and how he is going to get some ho's. Kid Rock refers to himself growing up in the song and calls himself a cowboy. A really good track overall and probably the best one on the album.
Track 3
Prodigal Son - This is actually one of the longest songs on the album and revolves around Kid himself as well as various other women. It mentions how all the woman want to hold on to him but Kid doesn't belong to them and how he was never in a gang or posse and never wanted to be as there is only one Kid Rock and he is his own man. This is one of the best songs on the album with great lyrics and is backed up with some great music.
Track 4
Paid - Not much going on with this one apart from just rapping. The lyrics are not the best and the music is nothing to write home about either.
Track 5
Early Morning' Stoned Pimp - Unlike the previous track this is another great song and one of the best on the album and featured on the soundtrack to the movie 'Roadtrip'. The lyrics are easily some of his best and he sings about how he has done drugs earlier in his life but has changed his ways. He mentions about how kids all over the world are going Kid Rock crazy. He also makes some funny references to ho's and how he treats them. A very good song overall.
Track 6
Dark and Grey - This unlike the rest of the songs is probably the heaviest song on the album yet with the least amount of profanity. The vocals from Kid are really good and the music is backed up by the Twisted Brown truckers. Again another song about how he has done drugs and got drunk but turned his life around. A really good song.
Track 7
3 Sheets to the wind (what's my name) - This song refers to Kid getting drunk and the fact that he gets so drunk at time that he can't even remember his own name. This song is more rap than it is rock but quite good none the less.
Track 8
Abortion - Not a lot to say about this track. The worst song on the album.
Track 9
I wanna go back - This track is mostly about how Kid wasted his life in earlier years and regrets it and that if he could go back and change it he would. Its one of the slower songs on the album which includes some female vocals which I think ruins the song. Not one of the better tracks.
Track 10
Ya' keep On - This is a really good song which includes great vocals from kid as well as good lyrics. This song has a lot of profanity in it mainly talking about how he handles ho's and how he is the best around. The song however like the previous one contains some dodgy female vocals. A good song overall.
Track 11
F**k That - This song is about Kid saying how you should ignore your parents and be your own person and be the best that you can be. He basically says that if he don't want to do something they have told him then he can give them a big f**k that. Pretty good song which I am sure many can relate to.
Track 12
F**k you Blind - Like a lot of his tracks he once again sings about he is the best and the main man and how he would f**k you blind. The song has profanity in every other sentence referring to the f word and ho's and bitches. A good song.
Track 13
Born to be a Hick - This is actually a very short song but funny song. Its a quick country style song that was originally released in 1992 but was not welcomed with a positive response.
Track 14
My Oedipus Complex - This song is about Kid's father and how he left him to fend for himself and look after his family. Basically sings about how his father left them and his mother was left to look after the family but struggled to cope. Fairly good song.
Summary
Overall this is a really good Kid Rock album and was actually the first Kid Rock album I actually bought which is why I am reviewing this one before the 'Devil without a Cause' album.
I would say if you like this album you will love 'Devil without a cause' which contains some classic tracks such as 'Bawitiba and 'Cowboy'
On this album overall the most recognised and well known track is without a doubt 'American Bad Ass'. The song was helped massively when WWE (World wrestling Entertainment) used it as an entrance them for 'The Undertaker'. Kid Rock also made a live appearance of one of the WWE TV shows to perform this song live to a sold out crowd.
The thing with Kid Rock is he never sticks to a particular style of music and his latest song 'All Summer Long' proves this a lot as its a long way off what the hardcore Kid Rock fans would have expected from him.
The history of rock in my opinion is a brilliant album and one which introduced me to Kid Rock and his style of music. Although 'Devil without a cause' is a fantastic album this one will remain my favourite if not for the fact it was my first Kid Rock album but for the fact 'American Bad Ass is one of my favourite tracks.
If you like Kid Rock or your just wanting to learn a bit more about him then it will be worth while getting your hands on this album. The best thing about it is you can probably relate to the lyrics as he sings about real life troubles and struggles.
5 stars out of 5
Summary: Very good album overall.
