Advantages: Some great tracks
Disadvantages: Some strange selections
Hits 60 is a 3 disc compilation album released in 2004, and features a lot of great hits from around that time. While very similar to the Now That's What I Call Music releases, the Hits CDs tend to vary a little in terms of production format, either featuring a year or an era.
The three disc compilation kicks off, on the first disc, with These Words, the catchy track from Natasha Bedingfield. She had a string of hits around this time over here in the UK before heading off to try her luck in the States, and this is possibly my favourite of hers. Wasn't a fan of Britney and Madonna's collaboration with Me Against The Music, but Anastacia's Left Outside Alone was a great track. There are some good tracks on this disc from Westlife, The Corrs and Pink, and Outkast's Hey Ya! was one of the catchiest tracks at the time. However, I wasn't a great fan of The Darkness' Love Is Only A Feeling and some of the other tracks seem a little weak in terms of selection from the hits, such as Jessica Simpson's Without You and Ana Johnsson's We Are.
The second disc is a bit more up tempo with Call On Me from Eric Prydz and Shapeshifters' Lola's Theme. Maroon 5's This Love is a boppy number, and Duran Duran gave us what we'd been waiting for for a while with a hit - Sunrise, with traditional Duran Duran riffs and sounds. Will Young and Michelle McManus give us the reality TV side of things while there were re-releases from Peter Andre and Gary Jules (Mysterious Girl and Mad World respectively).
The third disc gets a bit RnB with artists such as Eamon and Frankee airing their tiffs to the public (and making some money out of it, no doubt). Blazin's Squad, The Streets and Usher hit us with some awesome tracks, and I was particularly fond of Beyonce's Naughty Girl. However, not a fan of the Delta Goodrem track Not Me, Not I, nor some of the tracks in the middle of the disc, such as Ride Wit U No Rap from Joe and Blowin Me Up from JC Chasez.
Overall, the discs are well laid out, with the more poppy chart music on the first disc, the second being more upbeat and featuring some dance tracks, and the third giving us the RnB side of the compilation. It is generally well done, but there are some tracks on there that I was surprised about. Their selection was surely not down to their being better than some of the other tracks that could have been chosen, so I wondered why they were on there. Again, with compilations, a lot of it is down to taste, and perhaps I just wasn't a fan of some of the music whereas a lot of people would disagree. Either way, it's a decent album, and a well laid out 3 disc compilation.
Hits 60 is currently available from amazon.co.uk for around the £6 mark for a new copy, considerably less for a used one.
Summary: Good mix of music with some strange selections
