Advantages: Good intro to Patti Smith
Disadvantages: none
Two weeks ago, my friend lent me this CD. I'd heard of Patti Smith before, and I knew she was kind of well known and respected, but I didn't know why. The pace starts slowly as Patti and her band take the first few steps into their own rendition of Van Morrisons "Gloria". But when she builds up to the chorus, after a 2 minute wait, the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Not since I listened to Janis Joplin for the first time have I heard a female singer who could do this to me! There's alot of punky anger and energy in Patti Smith, but this is countered with some fantastic ballads and quiet moments. Not least of which is "Land Medley..", an epic, galloping, journey of a song, where Patti seems to struggle with her sanity. And that makes it all the more exciting for us! This superb album burns away, as it should, with A blistering live version of "My Generation", with John Cale (of Velvet Underground fame) pounding away at the bass. This is an essential addition to anyones music collection.

- 02/02/01 Yaey! I completely agree with everything you've said - and I love Janis too! What a completely underrated pair of matchless female artists! |
