I'm going to have to go against popular opinion here. I got hold of this album because it has "Life on Mars" on it- which is the best Bowie song ever. However, apart from that the rest of the album doesn't really live up to this brilliance.
True, it stands alone in the Bowie catalogue in terms of it's overall style (at least until "Hours" in 2000) and you have got some cracking tracks like "Changes", "Quicksand" and "The Bewlay Brothers" to keep you interested. Other than that, though, it struck me as being a bit of a return to the Space Oddity days of good enough, but uninspiring, pseudo-folk, with slight hints of it's successor (Ziggy Stardust)in the background.
Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I don't think 'Hunky Dory' sets the world alight like 'The Man Who Sold The World' should have done, and the Ziggy Stardust albums would do in a couple of years.
I'm in no way saying that this is a terrible album, but Bowie has done better- he really has.

Oh well, it's my favourite Bowie album, but I am no expert. Keep writing :-)
