Advantages: Life On Mars, Quicksand

Disadvantages: Not as good as The Man Who Sold The World

Opening with one of his most famous tracks, which is great record, but I am sick of hearing it and of it being quoted in reference to Bowie’s chameleon attributes. “Oh! You Pretty Things” is far better, with great piano and lyrics. This album is a bit more down to earth than “The Man Who Sold The World” there is a bit less of the magick and mysticism in the lyrics but there is still an ample smattering – a good example of which is the second track. The albums wanders around about, it is not a solid a piece of work as his previous, however it does contain a few nuggets. “Life On Mars?” despite hearing it a million times is still a fantastic record, as is “Quicksand”: Simple song construction to the point of perfection: Great lyrics, piano and acoustic guitar. There is a whole lot less rocky feel to this album, Mr. Ronson being restrained. “Andy Warhol” is nicely layered accoustic guitar, with haunting vocals. “Queen Bitch” rocks along nicely – the general sound of which seems to point toward “Ziggy Stardust” as an album. The album culminates by leaving the listener in the dark. “The Bewlay Brothers” returns Bowie once more to the shadows. To be honest a few tracks on this album are a bit naff (yet interesting never the less) but when it’s good, there is nothing to touch it.
