Advantages: Seminal work from a twisted genius.
Disadvantages: Took me about a year to get used to the harshness of track 5.
Yes, oh yes. This album is indeed a work of art. I you have any interest in progressive, interesting electronic music, then you must check out the Aphex Twin. And if you're looking to check out the Aphex Twin, then look no further, as I Care Because You Do is a superb introduction to this genius of a musician. In all my dance/electronic musical trawlings, I have yet to come across a man as innovative as Richard D. James (who has also appeared as Polygon Window, Caustic Window & AFX, among others). His experiments with rhythm repeatedly astound, as he substitutes drums for music, instruments for drums, and incredibly makes utterly any noise sound like it really, truly belongs in a tune. Aphex Twin is distinctly original, a veritable master of his art, and he will be remembered as a true pioneer of one of the most elusive genres of 90s music. You should be into this artist, it's that simple. Even my Iron Maiden/Metallica loving friend James loves Aphex Twin - just give the man a chance, and you will be won over. There are two options open to you after some heavy drinking - go to sleep, or stay awake. Everyone does the latter once in a while, and I personally always find it slightly odd. It was under these circumstances, and with this album, that I was converted from lowly bigbeat follower to the ranks of Aphex Twin fan - if you ever end up in that weary sitution, with this album, then stick it on. I've been in love with this album for ages now, so I love pretty much every track. But when I first bought it, it was tracks 1,2,9,10 & 11 that wowed me - and it's worth owning the album solely for these ones. If you want an introduction to the work of Richard D. James, I don't think you can do better than this. If you're already a fan, but don't own this album, then what are you playing at?!

- 12/11/00 It's really refreshing to read a jaggy hat op thats not over 1000 words. Clear, concise, and thankfully not too long :) |
