**Introduction** Few solo artists have ever made a bigger impact than Luther Vandross, with album sales of over 25m and an amazing 8 Grammy awards. His career was quite remarkable. Throughout the 1990's he was known for his smooth voice which seemed so effortless and his tender love ballads were known throughout the world and were played at countless weddings and probably funerals too. His death in 2005 aged just 54 was greeted with a huge tribute from many artists who were inspired by his music.
