Supergrass formed in 1993 in Oxford and consist of Gaz Coombes (Vocals/Guitar),
Mick Quinn (Bass) and Rob Coombes (Keyboards). The band were influenced by the likes of The Buzzcocks, The Jam and The Kinks.
Supergrass released their debut album I Should Coco in May 1995. It was produced by Ben Williams and went on to sell half a million copies in the UK.
Here's my views on I Should Coco track by track:
1/ I'd Like To Know: Cracking start! I guarantee that the words "I'd like to know where all the strange ones go" will remain in your head for days after listening to this song.
2/ Caught By The Fuzz: It may sound like Gaz has caught something dodgy but this is a fine little tune, bursting with energy and life. I think this was their first ever single.
3/ Mansize Rooster: "Why you looking so crazy? Why you looking so lonely for love?" sings Gaz during this upbeat, feel good treat of a song.
4/ Alright: This was the band's biggest ever hit, reaching #2 in the UK singles chart in July 1995. It certainly leaves you feeling "Alright"!
5/ Lose It: Another fast paced belter of a song which you inspire you to play air drums and possibly shake your head around too.
6/ Lenny: This song's got a tremendously addictive hook and a memorable line from Gaz, "I've been around and around and I've got no place to go now". Soon you'll be singing it over and over.
7/ Strange Ones: Another song bursting with energy and a quality turn on the guitar by Gaz Coombes. Is this song a kind of theme tune?
8/ Sitting Up Straight: This song's starts off with a pleasant bit of piano and almost fools you into thinking it's gonna be a ballad or something. But no, it's on with the general feel of this album...fast paced, energetic etc.
9/ She's So Loose: This is one of my favourite Supergrass songs ever. It's a top drawer indie anthem.
10/ We're Not Supposed To: Lots of weird effects on the vocals make this a lively and infectious song which won't fail to cheer you up on a bad day.
11/ Time: Another indie anthem with bags of personality and an uplifting feel. This was released as a double A side with Alright.
12/ Sofa (Of My Lethargy): I love this song so much! It's pleasant, charming and highly infectious. It makes you feel so relaxed and happy.
13/ Time To Go: A fitting end to a fabulous debut album. I feel so much better after listening to this cracker of an album!
I love this album, i'm not going to deny it, straight away i'll tell you this is a 5 out of 5 album for me. It sums up an era, it is fast paced pop with a nod to great British music of the past and its fun, irreverent and well written and performed.
The album was released in 1995 after the band had set up in 1993, the album coverwork shows the three band members, with the strange looking singer Coombes at the centre of things. The painting the cover art is taken from was done by Moody Painters in Oxford and the cover art is now classic in my eyes.
I'd Like to Know - A slow paced opener that builds up, this shows the drumming of Danny Goffey, the Guitar of Gaz Coombes and the Bass of Mick Quinn at their best. 8/10
Caught by the Fuzz - A young man caught by the police holding a small amount of cannabis, this is a great song, portraying the fear of a kids first brush with the law, the song is short but has perfect narrative, the fast paced wall of sound created by the thrashing drums, bass and guitar are awesome and this song still sounds brilliant today. 10/10
Mansize Rooster - Another single, this is a fast paced drill of a song, a real pop-punk classic that allows Coombes to show the full range of his strange, wonderful voice, this is a 10/10 song simply because it sounds so original, so much fun and the video is cracking too.
Alright - Everybody knows this song, it is a summer song, full of fun, verve and brio. It is a classic song and one the band will always be remembered for, its an all time great tune which stands up there with songs of all ages in this country. 10/10
Lose It - The third single from the album, this is a wall of sound song again as the build up of panic and tension in the singer create a weird song about not losing it, but it sounds like he is. I like this song, its frenetic and typical supergrass. 9/10
Lenny - Fourth Single from the album, this is heavier than many of the others and it suits too with the thumping bassline. I like this a lot it is one of my favourite songs on the album and shows a different style to the other songs, but is equally strong. 9/10
Strange Ones - I like this song, again there are odd acoustic tints to it but it really is fast, frenetic and great fun. Its an odd song which really suits this album. 9/10
Sitting Up Straight - A lovely tune, which is one of the weakest on the album but nonetheless still easily an 8 out of 10 song for its energy and verve.
She's So Loose - A good song which really allows Coombes to show off his wonderful voice, again this isn't a highlight but would be on most other albums.
We're Not Supposed to - This song is weird and wonderful and sounds like it should have been created for a sci-fi film, it makes me think of other worlds and is a beautifully created song. 8/10
Time - Another decent song which sits on its arrangement, this isn't my favourite on the album but is very listenable. 8/10
Sofa (of My Lethargy) - A chilled out instrumental song, I love the start with the piano and the chimes, it is so evocative and something I never forget in my head. A great song 9/10
Time to Go - A fun sign off which is weird and wonderful like this album, it catches the cartoony mood perfectly of the whole album. 8/10
Overall this album is a fun, boyish slice of pop-punk, I really love this its aggressive in a weedy way but is fast paced, frentic and action packed, this album deserves as many plaudits as it can get and really is a classic of its time for me. I can't praise it highly enough and believe that it should stand in the upper echelons of British popular music and is as good as any Oasis or Blur album of the period.
During the 90's I was happily swimming in the Britpop bubble, where every new band was the next best thing, and the pool of British music talent was endless. As with most scenes or movements the bubble burst, and whilst it meant some bands who were riding the wave came crashing down, it's was only the truly great bands who kept on swimming.
The testament to Supergrass' musical abilities lies in the fact that they are still around today. While Britpop lightweights Menswear, Northern Uproar and Echobelly were soon found lacking, The Supergrass boys showed they had enough music in their tanks to go for a long journey.
Maybe like a few others, it was the tune 'Alright' that first caught my attention and got me to buy the album. But where 'Alright' could have been a sign of a one hit wonder band, it was actually a gateway into an album full of lively, spunky, exciting odd pop gems, revealing a darker side to the band than a video of the members on a motorised bed whizzing down a beach might have first suggested.
It is to the band's eternal credit that they didn't fall for the trappings that were offered to them there and then (Gaz got offered a role as a Calvin Klein underwear model, Steve Spielberg was keen to make a 90's version of the Monkees with the band). They instead decided to remain happy residents in their own music world, and following albums such as 'In it for the money' showed that 90's pop culture's loss was British music's gain.
Its always good to re-visit the first offering from a band that's had a long and successful career and listening to 'i should coco' now is both a nostalgic trip and a reminder of when Supergrass first came on our radar with a certain amount of fizz, pop and good old fashioned British weirdness.
I should Coco was the debut album by Oxford based three piece Supergrass, the album was vibrant, fun and really fitted with the early nineties era of indie music and Britpop. Characterised by the charming anthem 'Alright' this album was a storming pop-punk debut which really labelled the band with a sound and image they subsequently found it difficult to move on from, at one point it is alleged that Steven Spielberg even offered to help them produce a tv series similar to the sixties cult classic, 'The Monkees.
I'd Like to Know - This is a storming opener, like a crazed pub band on acid, this mixes sixties influences with superb musicianship, the lead singer Gaz Coombes is distinctive in looks and sound and this is a really cool slice of fast paced sixties pop, the song moves about quite a bit but the chorus is really catchy and the drums and guitars are punchy and the song has a real charm to it.
Caught By the Fuzz - The story of a teenager being nicked by the police for a minor drugs offence, this is a funny and enthralling song, it's really good lyrically, the choruses and melodies are excellent and the whole story unravels perfectly, its exactly how an innocent teenager would feel, thinking what the hell have I done, I'm never doing this again. The guitars are thrashy and the drumming is exceptional, this is a charming warning to kids not to use drugs!!!
Mansize Rooster - The bands first single, thumping drums, melodic piano and then fast frenetic guitars and a wicked pop song, it does sound different with choruses that could have been done by the Muppets, its really interesting, part Small Faces, part Chas and Dave, part Muppet Show, as with the album its charming, fun and has a great pace and beat. Gaz sounds cool on here, the lyrics are decent too. A great debut song.
Alright - The song this band will always be known for it really is a classic British pop song and will be relevant in twenty years time too, it sums up summertime and being a kid, its fun, the pianos and guitars are fast but not overwhelming, the chorus is singalong and it has the feel of a poppy knees up, I love the chorus, the melodies, the lyrics, this is one of those perfect pop songs which just have that unforgettable quality. Its far better than Alright in my book.
Lose It - An attempt at more grown up music, the drums and guitars sound a lot more punky on this song, Gaz has effects on his voice and it makes it sound more mature, the song is more serious and this is a thrashy effort, the rising chorus is pretty cool if not a bit of a mess, it's a good song, well produced and well performed, though not one of the albums highlights.
Lenny - I love this song, it starts heavily with drums and guitar throbbing in unison, really building up a sense of purpose for a prolonged period, Gaz sings perfectly, the band play really tightly, it is a cool song with lots of variation and layers, its not a simple song, it is pretty messed up and all the better for it, as with the whole album, its wonderfully produced, it sounds messy but isn't at all.
Strange Ones - Starts with an ethereal sound and some strange voices and then morphs into a rampant guitar led song about a place where the strange ones go, this is a cool fun lo-fi tune which has no real point but is a thrashy fun type of song none the less. It slows down and speeds up and the band really like messing with their songs, it works once again, this is an impressive song.
Sitting up Straight - Where the hell did this come from, it sounds like the theme tune to a seventies ITV drama about life in the Yorkshire dales, then the mad guitar kicks in and we have Gaz sounding as clear as he has on the album, this is frenetic and all over the place, it sums up the album, fast paced, a short song, great musicianship, writing and production and then its gone, almost forgotten immediately.
This is a classic 90's indie album for me, it was one of the albums I loved most growing up, its short and punchy and at under 9 songs, it gets its point across and leaves you, like a short, sharp shock.
Gaz Coombes voice is superb throughout, its unique and fast paced and he really hits his notes perfectly, the guitar and drums are superb too, fast, frenetic but totally in control.
I love the production of the album, the songs are all catchy but break down into much more complex pieces and its interesting to come back to, this could easily have come from the sixties from a band like the Kinks or Small Faces, but has a cheeky nineties modernity to it too. There are some classic songs including Alright, Caught by the Fuzz and Mansize Rooster and overall its an album I would recommend for a house party on a summers evening, its short, fun and really lively and it makes you feel charged up. Lyrically it veers from sublime to ridiculous but these guys are much more than catchy tunes and silly haircuts there is real substance to their music.

I love this cereal, it is chocolatey and sweet. The milk turns chocolatey, for a long time no other cereal did this and kelloggs coco pops was a very popular cereal then and still is now. I really like chocolate or anything chocolatey so this is my favourite cereal, i eat it as snacks, breakfast, before i go to sleep, i never get tired of it. It is a treat for young kids and mainly aimed at them but it does not mean us older people can not have them. I think this is a very nice cereal and i definatley reccommend it if your a choclate lover.
I don't think I know of another album with such an exuberant, extravagant, fast and furious start as I Should Coco by Supergrass. For those of you not in the know (and if not, WHY NOT!), Supergrass are a three piece band hailing from the deepest, darkest depths of Oxford and are made up by Gaz Coombs on lead and vocals, Danny Coffey on drums and Mick Quin on bass guitar. I should Coco was their first album, and lodged itself at No.1 in the UK album chart during the long, hot summer of 1995 and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and sold nearly a million copies world-wide. After a quick, drum stick tapping count in, (1,2, 1,2,3,4!) we are launched straight into "I'd Like to Know" with a cracking bass guitar beat in the background keeping the song moving along at a furious pace, joined by lots of la laaaaing, some hyperactive drumming and Gaz on lead and vocals. Four minutes later and there is no let up as we move into "Caught by the Fuzz", and I think they mean the police rather than any other sort of fuzz you could think of! The power and exuberance doesn't let up, with Mick on bass going manic, with Gaz on lead guitar and Danny on drums not far behind! Track 3 is "Mansize Rooster" and starts with a drum cymbal beat, in kick some keyboards and vocals, then after 20 seconds it all kicks off completely, another manic song that you're tapping foot can only just keep up with! It's not until 9 minutes onto the album and we reach track 4 that things begin to settle down a little, and it's a good job it does too as I for one was getting a bit tired just listening! track 4 is "Alright", which is the track most of you will know best and has to be the seminal song of the summer of '95. If you haven't seen the video, I'd recommend it just to see the band flashing those lovely pearly teeth and messing about with those wonderful sidebu
rns! I've been growing mine for years but they still haven't reached the size of those on display in this video! It's a fun song and the most commercial on the album, and was their biggest selling single to date, a No. 2 hit in the singles chart. A bit of the pace is lost in track 5 and 6, "Lose it" and "Lenny". Both these songs are a bit darker and not nearly as bouncy as what has gone before. Swiftly onto track 7," Strange Ones", which has a rather atmospheric start, especially when you consider what has gone on before, with a sort of humming in the background. Things soon develop into a mixture of pacy bits and slow parts, a fast, bouncy chorus followed by a more contemplative verse with lyrics such as "I would cry for you, I would die for you" and "Are you strange enough, are you deranged enough" and has a superb ending with all the instruments playing together on a beat, boom boom boom! "Sitting up Straight" is track 8 and everything slows with a church bells and keyboard into lulling you into a false sense of security. Everything is soon back to what has come before, with some rapid guitar playing and swiftly sung lyrics, building to a crescendo as the drums and bass guitar kick in. The song loses it somewhat with a rather dodgy guitar solo, but we're soon onto.... Track 9, "She's so loose" which is another more polished effort, a little less edgy, and that's all I've got to say about that! And onto track 10, "We're not supposed to" Not supposed to do what I'm not so sure! I think it's about people making their own decisions, even if, as the tile says, they're not supposed to! This song has less power to it but is a very excellent track and all over in 2 minutes. Sounds like a few other activities I sometimes perform!!! "Time" for track 11. This time the vocals
and Gaz's voice shine through, proving he really can sing and definitely hold a note. There's a great harmonica in the background. I do like a nice bit of mouth organ whenever I can get it! I'll have to learn to platy it myself one day. You'll be pleased to know that there are only two more tracks to go! Number 12 is "Sofa (of my lethargy" which is very appropriate as I'm typing this in a very lethargic state on my sofa. It is a very relaxed song, the album is all slowed down again, maybe they were getting at bit tired by this time. There is a very mellow ending to this longest track of the album. They seem to have forgot to finish playing and just ad-libbed for two minutes. Finally, it's "Time to Go", a very uninspired title for the last song on an album!. It's one of those cheesy goodbye tracks that bands seem to feel they have to add to the end of an album. I imagine this is ideal for playing at the end of concerts, but I wish they hadn't bothered! Phew, finally finished, and I had promised myself I was never going to do an album review track by track, never mind! Overall the album is excellent, fairly motoring along at a rapid rate of knots throughout, full of bassy, throaty guitar playing and rather manic drumming at times. A booming but not overpowering beat pervades most of the tracks, and you'll be shattered from all that foot tapping by the time it finishes!
When I bought this album back in 1995 it was on the strength of the hit single 'Alright' that was everywhere that summer. Even though I still really love that song it is probably the weakest track on a great, great album. From the punky 1-2-3-4 opening of 'I'd Like to Know' and 'Caught by the Fuzz' (I can't think of a song that better recreates the tension and paranoia of getting arrested for drugs)the album takes you on a journey through rock and rhythm and blues and gradually mellows out until by the closer 'Time To Go' any tensions you had are long gone. The next two albums haven't, in my opinion, quite lived up to the debut but I should Coco is definitely one of my all time favourites.
Well, what can I say. This has to be one of the best albums that I've ever purchased. Unfortunately Supergrass are still one of the most underrated acts in Britain today. This, their debut album, has all the energy and drive that is Supergrass. This album kicks off with the superb 'I'd Like to Know' which is very characteristic of all early Supergrass songs. Mansize Rooster and Caught by the Fuzz continue the same sort of reggae/indie/rock theme and then you hit the song which launched Supergrass into the big time. I mean of course 'Alright'. This was a huge hit in 1995 and started to make people sit up and think, hey maybe supergrass are alright after all. As the album progresses, you notice that the songs start to mellow out a little more from the fast paced indie rock at the beginning to Sofa (of my lethargy). For a debut album, the 'grass did a magnificent job, and they set the stage for 'In it for the money' which shyed away from this album with more deep tracks. It's got to be said that this album is a lot of fun to listen to and is a modern day classic. Buy it
