If on a Winter's Night CD

      Sting - If on a Winter's Night......

Sting is one of my favourite singers. From The Police to his solo albums, he has really produced some great music. According to an article I read, Sting has received sixteen Grammy Awards for his work, receiving his first Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1981, and receiving an Oscar nomination for best song. He is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

That's why when I saw his Winter album advertised it seemed so different but so typically Sting that I just had to get it. Apparently it is his favourite season and my favourite time of year for music so I was excited to listen to it. What I also love bout the album is the photo on the front cover. It features a typical winter scene that is just incredibly beautiful, dark trees covered in snow and the ground all covered with snow too. In the picture is also Sting walking one of his dogs. I saw him do an interview about this album and I think this photo was taken in his own grounds which look stunning!

The album, If on a Winter's Night was released on 27 October 2009 in the United States and 2 November 2009 in the United Kingdom. On the back of the CD it explains about the disc. "Inspired by Sting's favourite season, If on a Winter's Night.... takes traditional music from the British Isles as its starting point and evolves into a compelling and personal journey with music spanning over five centuries (including two if Sting's own songs.) An evocative collection of lullabies, carols and songs, Sting's new album celebrates the many facets of winter - before the snows melt and the cycle of the seasons begin once more."

I found this album to be very haunting and romantic in a way. Sting's voice is beautiful and the array of instruments used in the songs is wonderful. The traditional carols were lovely and perfect for the Christmas season. You could definitely listen to this album all year round though. The tracks on the album are as follows:

      "Gabriel's Message"
      "Soul Cake"
"There is No Rose of Such Virtue"
"The Snow It Melts the Soonest"
      "Christmas at Sea"
"Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming"
      "Cold Song"
      "The Burning Babe" (2:45)
      "Now Winter Comes Slowly" (3:06)
      "The Hounds of Winter" (5:51)
      "Balulalow" (3:10)
      "Cherry Tree Carol" (3:12)
"Lullaby for an Anxious Child" (2:50)
      "Hurdy-Gurdy Man" (2:51)
"You Only Cross My Mind in Winter" (2:36)
