Advantages: Easy Listening, Classic Tunes, Can sing along

Disadvantages: None

I can’t really say that I was a big Wham! Fan when they were originally around – I mean I was 4 years old when they released Young Guns in 1982! However, Wham! songs always seem to turn at most of the night-clubs I go to (I know what you’re all thinking – what sad, cheesy, places does he go to….).

So recently, whilst browsing through the auctions at ebay.co.uk, I stumbled across a Wham greatest hits CD – ‘If You Were There’ – and it was at a bargain £2.20! It did have a couple of days left on the auction, but I managed to win it at the cool price of £2.80 plus P&P.

I must admit that this CD is a classic (well in my opinion!). There are one or two songs which I hadn’t really heard of much (‘Where did your Heart Go?’ and ‘Like a Baby’), but after listening to them they are pretty good.
The main reasons for buying the CD though were for the timeless classics like ‘Club Tropicana’. What a tune this is! Its such a catchy tune and you just can’t help thinking of sun, sea, sand in a tropical place – which helps with the current weather in this country. Then we move onto more dance anthems of the early eighties like ‘I’m your man’, ‘Freedom’ and ‘Wake me up before you go go’ – the songs that everybody automatically seem to think of when you mention Wham!

Next come the so-called controversial songs of ‘Young Guns’ and the ‘Wham Rap’ which were ‘apparently’ supposed to be about and reflect Thatcherism at the time.
Other cool tunes on the album include ‘If you were there’, ‘Everything she wants’, and ‘The Edge of Heaven’ – oh, and who could forget one of the all-time great Christmas classics of ‘Last Christmas’ – which only never got to number one due to the record breaking Band Aid song.

To finish off the CD, the final two tracks are re-mixed up-beat versions of ‘Everything she wants ‘97’ and ‘I’m your man ‘96’. They’re funky in their own kind of way although I must admit you can’t beat the originals.

So there you have it – I’ve come out of the closet now and I urge all you fellow Wham! fans to do the same. I’d recommend this CD to anyone – especially if you can find one as cheap as what I did!

You bad, bad person! I'd only just managed to get "Club Tropicana" out of my head after hearing it on an ad, and now it's back again! Hubby will kill me when I start singing it later...

Serious ly, though, great op ;-)
