Return to darker days, with heavier production.
Groove riffs are overly repetitive.

Pioneering progressive metal.
Rather samey.

More songs, nice dual guitars, continues established sound.
Pretty much the same thing again and again.

Effective incorporation of mellow elements into modern black metal.
Songs tend towards similarity.

Epic folk metal.
Slightly overblown and incoherent.

Something different.
Will disappoint fans.

Varied and accessible black metal.
Lacks authentic atmosphere of its predecessor.

Early symphonic black metal.
Fairly primitive and repetitive.

Instantly memorable guitar riffs comparable to the greats.
Subject matter is narrow-minded to say the least.

Classic black metal sound.
A little short.
