      Very helpful

      Franco Battiato's latest album (2007).

The latest release from Italian singer/musician Franco Battiato is an interesting mix of pop with classical elements, drafting in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a high-budget performance that nonetheless knows when to rely on understatement. The classical elements are seamlessly integrated into most of the songs, especially as Battiato's own vocal performance easily drifts from mellow singing to semi-operatic as often, and his duets with a female singer are mostly satisfying, even though 'Era L'Inizio Di Primavera' ends up sounding more like it belongs in a Disney film.

The grandeur of the orchestra does present a problem in a few songs, particularly those like 'Niente è Come Sembra' and 'Io Chi Sono?' that begin in a successfully minimalist direction before this illusion of isolation is shattered by the string section half-way through, but it feels most out of place in the more upbeat and consciously pop-styled songs, particularly the opener and 'The Game is Over' with their faster tempo and poppier vocal performance, and against the hip hop rhythm of sorts that leads track three.

At only thirty-three minutes in length, this even feels too short to be of any real interest to fans, seeming more like an E.P. than a full-length release, but at least Franco Battiato's days of tedious and terrible keyboard tomfoolery are long behind him.
