Advantages: good songs in a sensible order, good sleeve notes
Disadvantages: none!
I had been wanting this CD for ages before I finally found it for £5.99 in the Virgin Sale (top tip bargain hunters!) It's easy to forget that Madonna had so many 80s hits at the minute due to her recent reincarnations as Earth Mother and Cowgirl Chic, but there are loads of songs on the CD that you will forget that she released. The CD goes in chronological order from her first hit to the most recent (well, the most recent in 1990). I didn't realise that Holiday was Madonna's first hit. This device also means that you don't hear all the songs you know at the start of the CD and then stop listening by the end, as it is in the case of Take That's Greatest Hits. The sleeve notes of the Immaculate Collection are really very useful. They give you detailed information on Madonna herself and on the songs. I personally hate it when sleeve notes merely contain a track listing - what's the point?! I didn't know all the songs on the CD before listening to it. It's interesting to note that an artist didn't have to go in at No 1 with their first single to continue making music 10 years ago. I also find Madonna's love-hate relationship with the church very very interesting. The album's dedicated to the Pope for goodness' sake!! The songs on the CD are really enjoyable pop. Lucky Star is a little different to the rest as it's in a different style. Papa Don't Preach is now a classic as is the excellent Material Girl. Vogue doesn't need any introduction and Cherish is a lovely lovely song that I would be proud to have sung. My personal favourite is Little Prayer, I think it's a fab song. All in all this is a very good album that will enhance your CD collection and your knowledge of the world's most famous, and currently most trendy, woman.
