Disadvantages: Disadvantages - what an inult

Well Madonna was at the time voted the artist of the decade for the 80’s so this album that has all her 80’s hits must be the best of the 80’s.

From holiday to Vogue this album covers the lot, minus a few hits like ‘who’s that girl’ and ‘true blue’ there’s not anything missing. The album is sadly missing most of the lyrics but you shouldn’t be a fan if you don’t know the words. There are lyrics to the two new songs on the album, rescue me and justify my love. Instead of the other lyrics there are a few pictures of Madonna in silly posses and an article on Madonna from a paper.

So heres the albums hits one by one…

Holiday (4.06)
This is the only song Madonna has sung on every one of her five tours. It is one of her best-known songs and is what got her noticed, as her second single ever. Only one group have ever been given permission to cover it and that was stardust who mixed it into another song.

It is basically about having an escape from life and celebrating what you have. People don’t appreciate what we have got and if we united with the world for one big party (just like people do for new years) life would be so much better. It’s a nice little cheesy number but then what do you expect? Strongly as well this is one of Madonna’s few singles that never had a video to go with it.

Lucky Star (3.37)
I really like this song because it is so sweet. It is about how her lover is so lovely and she is really lucky to have them (Pass me a bucket)!!! Madonna gets the idea of stars and integrates them into so many meanings, which she bases her song on.
It has a nice fast bit in the middle for dancing and all through the song it has an nice little poppy beat. Just the way I like it J

Borderline (4.00)
One of Madonna’s earliest songs that I really like. It is about someone Madonna is seeing but they just seem to
crowd her and then ignore her. The more she sees them the more she wants to get rid of them because she gets mixed messages. In the end she has had the last straw and has been pushed over the boarder line. It has a nice simple beat and keyboard but then so do most Madonna songs.

The video is good with Madonna as a model doing all the poses us girls normally just do in front of the mirror when nobody is in… Or is that just me?

Like a Virgin (3.11)
Well I must be in a minority but I hate this song. If you say Madonna people normally think of this song. If you switch onto tv and they are playing a Madonna song I’ll put money if it’s an old song it will be this. WOW I’m going to be rich!!!
It is about the start of a relationship and how happy it is. When it comes to sex it feels like it the beginning again and she is a very virgin, even if she isn’t. It has a nice drum machine beat in the back and guess what YES another keyboard.

Material Girl (3.53)
Well it’s been her nickname since she did this song, but apparently she has claimed that she is not materialistic. The song is about going out with people because they buy her expensive presents and they make her rich. Sadly in the end she is the rich girl that all the boys want to go out with and have a bit of her money.
With its nice happy teeny bopper beat its definitely a catchy tune. The video is a take off of Marilyn Monroe’s film blonde have more fun, when Marilyn sings ‘diamonds are a girls best friend’.

Crazy For You (3.45)
This is one of the oldest songs on the album. It is from the 1985 film Vision Quest that Madonna had a small role as a singer in. It is a love song about a stranger she is in love with and who she makes love to. The song is also featured on Something To Remember.

Into The Groove (4.09)
Well this is an earlier version of Vogue (and my preferred version). It’s a nice lit
tle poppy number from Madonna’s first movie, ‘Desperately Seeking Susan.’ Madonna talks about how dancing is a great escape from life and all you have to do is ‘get into the groove’.
It’s really good for dancing (surprise surprise) and its fun. What more do you want?

Live To Tell (5.18)
This is taken off the True Blue album of 1986 and also is off the soundtrack of Madonna’s of ex-husband Sean Penn although I do not know the name of the film off hand. It is about making mistakes and being blinded by love. It is a very sad mellow song, which any person who has been used or has had a broken heart can relate to. The song is also featured on something to remember.

Papa Don’t Preach
This song caused Madonna a lot of agro because people thought she was encouraging teenage pregnancy. Instead she was only bringing attention to the subject. So now I can let you guess what the song is about. Madonna puts herself in the position of a pregnant teen. She talks about all the courage she pulls up to tell her daddy and that no matter what he says she cant get rid of it (Madonna is a Catholic and they don’t believe in abortion).

She talks about how secure her relationship is and that’s she loves her boyfriend it wasn’t a one night thing. It makes you really sympathise will all the poor girls that are my age (16). It was a hit and has a nice little beat to it.

Open Your Heart
I love the song (and I know the dance). It’s a nice little dance song with a happy typical beat. It is about someone Madonna likes but they don’t seem to return her affection. She doesn’t give up and tries to persuade them to like her and ‘open there heart’.

La Isla Bonita
The song opens with a Spanish guitar to meet its Spanish name. Then Madonna speaks in Spanish, goodness knows what she is saying though, I’ve never been good at languages. r>The song is about memories of a play Madonna has been to in Spain called San Pedro. San Pedro is a little private Spanish island that Madonna filmed her video for ‘Express Yourself’ on.
It is a love song trying to taking on traditional Spanish music properties. I think it does it well and I have to say it is one of my favourite songs. The video is beautiful as well with Madonna in traditional Spanish dress dancing in the streets.

Like A Prayer
This song when released caused a huge stir. It was meant to originally be on a Pepsi advert. When they saw the video and how angry people were about it, they didn’t want Madonna to promote them anymore (she kept the $5 million they gave her as well).

The song opens to the sound of a church choir. The video explores religious ecstasy. It has her burning crucifixes and kissing a black Jesus. The lyrics are a cross between a love song to a partner and God. Madonna, herself being a raised catholic, shows her faith in a very interesting, original way.

There is a gentle beat to the back of the song making it great to dance to. There is also clapping in the background to keep beat and as well to add the sound of a church in congregation feeling to the song.

Express Yourself
This is about women taking control and not settling for your lot, this is obviously a very strong issue to Madonna as she herself represents this issue. The video to this song cost over $1, which at the time was the second most expensive video of all time after Michael Jackson’s ‘thriller’ video. It is set in a factory where Madonna is in control of all the workers.

The song has a very loud beat to it; Madonna’s voice drowns this out showing that she is control. Its is brilliant for dancing which is not a surprise because I cant think of many Madonna songs that don’t have their own dance (vogue comes to mind).

Cherish
The video to this song is
full of mermen on a beach. It’s a very happy song about lust. Madonna really likes the person and wants to be with them. She cherishes every moment with them and compares them to Romeo and Juliet who killed them selves because they couldn’t live without each other.

The music is very plain with a simple beat making it good to dance to and put you in a jolly mood.

Vogue
What are you looking at? If you are a Madonna fan and you don’t the dance then you should be ashamed, I mean I know the dance and I can manage to do most of it. Music is basically an escape for people and Madonna tries to express this to us through this song. Madonna is an actual dancer and has two dance scholarships.
The song is very long the way Madonna songs go but that’s not bad because its meant to be danced to. Once you get into the beat and strut your funky stuff the time will fly by. A great song!!!

Justify My Love
This songs video when it was released was not allowed to be played on MTV because children watch, and it had a very adult theme… Sex. Madonna breathes heavy in this song and talks about sex basically. But then this is Madonna what’s new?
It is a good song, which really breaks her teenybopper image to Sexy Madonna who really is expressing herself.

Rescue Me
This was the only song on the album that wasn’t released as a single and one of the two new songs released.
It has a gentle beat and keyboard in the background making the lyrics very loud compared to the music. Madonna talks about how she is attracted to a man and she wants him to rescue him from being alone. Madonna uses a form of singing and talking at the same time, its sounds good. The chorus is catchy and has a nice upbeat rhythm, however you can see why its not been released.

So basically the Queen of Pop made a great album. I recommened it and hope I have encouraged you to buy it. It has no weak tracks jus
t pure quality pop, what more could Madonna fans ask for?

Nice op of a great album. Although should point out that Holiday has never been covered, and was just sampled which is different.

nice op Sarah, some interesting madonna facts. Did you get to see her live earlier in the year? I went to Earls Court on July 9th for the best gig of my life, it was the first time I'd managed to see her live as I was always 'too young' before.
