Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: 1 weak track and it is the 1st full track
So Pendulum bring us their third album. If you are not aware Pendulum are trio of friends from Australia. They consist of two Producers and one dj.They got their first big break in 2002 with the release of their first single 'vault'.It came out on an independent label called 31 records.Over the course of the next 5 years Pendulum went from strength to strength releasing many singles on different labels until they exclusively signed with Breakbeat Kaos.
They became famous all over the globe thanks to their DJ sets and music. After the release of their first album (Hold your colour),Pendulum came into a legal dispute with Breakbeat Kaos and subsequently left. This was after the commercial success of their album and they were then signed to Warner music. After a quiet spell they released a song called Granite which showed them having a more rocky sound to their music. The song was play listed on Radio 1 but did not really do to well sale wise. Then Propane Nightmares was released and they had a top ten hit , and started getting booked for all the major festivals. They have become renowned for their high energy live Drum and Bass sets.Featuring live drummers and singers. The second album In Silico was released and was very well accepted commercially reaching number 4 in the UK album chart. This caused a lot of hate from many Drum and Bass fans as they accused Pendulum of selling out. After touring for nearly a year solid they are back with Immersion, so lets have a listen ......
Wow not what i was expecting a very powerful piece of music starts off the album,it almost sounds like it could have been in the soundtrack from Lord of the rings due to its atmosphere and depth. It gives me the sense that its building up for something special
2.Salt in the wounds
Starts off with the typicall Pendulm synth that they have used in a lot of songs with slowed down beats building up to the main part of the song.Ermmm the drop sounds just like their old song Slam but cut up.Do not get me wrong it is very well produced and very high energy based but it is not exactly very original. They have used pretty much all the same sounds from Slam but have changed the melodies. It does not have much progression to it either and features no vocals. It does work on the dance-floor but i think this song will divide a lot of fans. The drum and bass fans wont like it because it is just like slam, and the commercial fans i cant see liking it as there is no vocals and it does not progress.
The current single play listed on radio 1 and made it to number 4 in the UK singles chart. Typical Pendulum beats are put together with a nice synth and some great vocal work. Defiantly better than the opening track.Everything sits together perfectly.A simple piano and some nice vocal work build the track up into a great little track. Defiantly aimed for their live performances.Very nice to listen to and has the high energy you would expect from Pendulum.
4.Set me on fire
A very Prodigy sounding track. The track starts with a nice little break with a vocal loop before dropping into some crazy sound effects. The main part of the track is Dubstep sounding basically slowed down drum and bass.It has some pitched up reggae style vocals flowing with the sound effects quite nicely.I like the production of the track it is very clean, but the track itself is a bit boring its very slow and does not have al lot going on.I think they are trying to cash in on Chase and Statuses success by making this track they just don't pull it off though.Their sound defiantly suits more fast paced high energy songs as opposed to this.
Starts off with a very rock sounding guitar and just drops out of nowhere into a very nice sounding track. The clever sound effects sit brilliantly with the vocals. This is defiantly what they do best, keeping the song to one genre instead of mashing 2 or 3 genres together.A very epic track in my opinion. Not so much a drum and bass track but still has the energy you would expect form Pendulum. The vocals are great and give the track that edge they defiantly hold this track together and make it what it is.It finishes very acoustic sounding with a nice simple guitar being strummed along to the sound effects of the song.
6.Under the waves
This starts off with a simple break-beat and a nice vocal, starts off very light if that makes sense its refreshing on the ears as there is not lots going on.The drop was not what i was expecting as they use the high pitched synth noise yet again and the vocals disappear. It is a very easy listening track due to its simplicity. It would not work on a dance-floor but it is quite pleasant,i really like it but i am not sure why.Everything just sits together nicely and the sound effects give the tune a nice edge.
A very dark sounding intro kicks off with some heavy breaks and sound effects. It becomes very epic and dark sounding and some nice vocals come in to build up track brilliantly. The drop its very pendulum sounding with the synths but it is angry if that makes sense. The vocals and crashing drums give it another dimension,I'm sitting here bouncing my head as i write this, its great. Defiantly reminiscent of their earlier stuff. It is very well produced and packs a serious punch although a bit repetitive i don't find myself getting bored of it just more bouncing :) The track also features Liam Howett of Prodigy
8.The island - Part 1 Dawn
Starting with a simple hand clap and sound effect the intro is very simple with a teasing sytnth slowly creeping in before it all goes quiet and builds into a very nice break beat track. The synths sit perfectly over the drums and some nice vocal work kicks in almost making it sound like a track deadmau5 has produced. Extremely list-enable .I can see this being the next single,it still has the edgy sound that you would expect from Pendulum just slowed down giving the album a refreshing break.
9.The island -Part 2 Dusk
The intro is exactly the same as part 1 ,but it drops into an absolute monster of a house track.I have never heard anything like this before, but i want to hear more of it.It really is incredible the production and everything is perfect.I can not see any dance music fan not bouncing around to this.Very high energy. It becomes clear why the track has to versions now as this will be the dance floor version, and the other will be used for live performances. It keeps changing and progressing all the time this is defiantly my favourite track so far off the album WOW that is all i can say.
A very dark sounding drum beat and sound effects start off with a scary vocal almost sounds like slipknott. The vocal remains on the intro with the slowed down beats and out of nowhere it drops into a monster of a drum and bass track with trashy guitars. Its a very good track a bit weird to put it aftre a house track but hey.It is very high energy and is aimed at the mosh pit never mind the dance floor. The darkest track I have ever heard from them but that is not a bead thing.
Another house beat sounding intro with some very clever effects. This is defiantly Prodigy influenced that is clear just by listening to the intro. The drop is just head blowing it is like being punched in the face full on drums and vocals kick in out of nowhere and the synths are used very well with teasing basslines and guitar riffs. This is a very good song, it progress well and keeps you wanting more.It does jump about a bit but this is defiantly a High energy based track that was made to get people bouncing. That drop is just phenomenal This is defiantly another favourite, more of this please Pendulum :)
A nice slow vocal starts this track off,and it is needed after the madness of the previous track.A nice guitar teases in with the vocal then again out of nowhere comes the high energy drums and synths, they are getting very good at lulling me into a false sense of security. The drop is quite heavy and again reminiscent of slam but is comes back in with the vocals and gives the track its listen ability which will appeal to the more mainstream audience.A very well produced track as always.I like it it is a drum and bass track but the parts where the vocals come in give it another dimension.Another strong track on the album :)
13.Self vs Self
A very rock sounding intro almost sounds like system of a down with that guitar riff.Drops into a very heavy metal track with crashing drums,None of the high pitched synths or sound effects are in this track. It will defiantly get your adrenaline flowing. When the vocal does kick in it is very angry sounding this is defiantly a heavy rock tune. The only way to describe it is slipknot but you can understand the vocals. Not really my sort of thing but very good and i could defiantly listen to it
Back to the drum and bass, a very typicall Pendulum sounding intro drops into a nice little track.A much more subtle vocal fits brilliantly with a nice piano melody. The beats are quick paced and give the track the high energy feel. Not really sure about this track, it is like they have tried to mix high tempo with low tempo and i dont really like it.And the guy singing it sounds like Phil Collins,so imagine that over drum and bass.It does not really progress much either and becomes repetitive extremely quickly.
The final track starts off with an 80s sounding melody. With a teasing drum roll leaving you wonder where the track will go.The drop features an almost pop sounding beat with also very pop sounding vocals. Not what i was expecting to hear from Pendulum. But it works it is a nice slice of electro pop and a great way to finish the album.
The whole album has a solid sound to it.It does not start off to great but it gets better and better in my opinion. Its great to see them being so diverse and covering so many different types of music. Its pretty heavy going in some places though so i would not advise you to listen to it if you would like to hear something mellow. It was not as monotonous as i was expecting. And the track Island part 2 just blew me away it was so good.I can see this being appealing to anyone who is a fan of their previous stuff not to mention anyone who like their beats fast and furious. It is a refreshing change to see artists coming out of their comfort zones and trying their hand at different things. And when it does happen it does not normally work but Pendulum have managed to buck that trend and have unleashed a great piece of modern music on the world. It is available as CD for £9 from amazon or as an mp3 bundle from pretty much everywhere.I hope you have as much fun listening to it as i did :)
