Advantages: Hawaiian sounds, chill out, relax
Disadvantages: None
Picture the scene: You're in Hawaii and it's a beautiful, picture perfect beach day. You just spent the afternoon surfing. Now you are sitting by a campfire with the sun setting in the background. All around you are your best friends and you are sipping on sweet Mai-Tai's with fresh cherries and pineapple around the rim. In the background you hear sweet dulcet tones coming from the guitar, you look around and you see that Jack Johnson is playing, the best surf chillout album ever.
This is the mood that any Jack Johnson music puts me in. He sound is undenieably Hawaii with a melodic voice that makes you dream you are riding the waves and relaxing with no worries or cares in the world. He has such a soft dreamy voice and I really like listening to this music when I am relaxing or just wanting to have something on in the background that is easy to listen to and unoffensive. I think his title to this album is very fitting, In Between Dreams, as if he listens or composes this music in between his dreams.
This is actually Jack Johnson's third album and was released in March 2005. According to an article I read as of May 10, 2006, the album had sold 2.1 million copies in the United States but as this was quite a while ago now I'm sure it's sold a lot more than that in the meantime.
The cover is a very vibrant yellow colour and to me conjures up imagines of a lovely bright yellow sun and gorgeous beaches. The cover actually features a Mango Tree, this refers to the Mango Tree, the studio where In Between Dreams was recorded. There is also a reference to the Mango Tree in Better Together where Jack mentions he is sitting underneath the tree.
Highlights on this album for me include, Better Together, a nice love song where he says that things are always better together, such nice words, and Sitting, Waiting, Wishing. This too is a love song but one of unrequited love where a guy is singing that he is sitting, waiting, wishing for a girl to notice him and respond to his advances. It's nice to see a male making the effort once in a while and showing his feelings.
The rest of the tracks are as follows:
1. "Better Together"
2. "Never Know"
3. "Banana Pancakes"
4. "Good People"
5. "No Other Way"
6. "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing"
7. "Staple It Together"
8. "Situations"
9. "Crying Shame"
10. "If I Could"
11. "Breakdown"
12. "Belle"
13. "Do You Remember"
14. "Constellations"
