Advantages: Very good album overall
Disadvantages: Nothing major
After the success of the first album, Shola Ama fans had to wait over 2 years for the second. In Return is a more refined and mature album than Much Love, and shows off Ama’s vocal talent to best effect. The album starts with “Still Believe”, a great track that was released as a single. It features the Trondheim gospel choir to impressive effect. This sets the tone for the album well, a very mellow sound, great for putting on when you want to relax. It is a lengthy album too, with 16 tracks in all, and no obvious fillers. My personal favourite tracks are the beautiful “Run To Me” and the longest track on the album, the duet “Superficial Fantasy”. “Queen for a day” is another good track on an album with very few weak links. The least impressive track in my opinion is “Lovely Affair”, which ironically seemed to get the thumbs up from most reviewers when the album was released. This track uses a sample from the 1973 song “Family Affair” by Sly and the Family Stone. If you liked Shola’s debut album Much Love, then you will love this. It contains a much more grown-up set of songs, and Shola’s voice is as wonderful as ever. Although she never seems to get much attention, she must be one of the most underrated artists in the UK.
