Advantages: Satisfying return to form.

'In the Arms of God' is a long-awaited return to form for Corrosion of Conformity after the comparative disappointment of its predecessor, even if some fans' expectations of a return to their metal days of 'Blind' turned out to be in vain. Essentially, this is a continuation of 'Wiseblood' from nine years earlier, side-stepping the whole commercial 'America's Volume Dealer' phase and delivering some strong, heavy and loud Southern-fried metal.

The songs tend to be slow and drawn-out, but don't become dull in the way the previous album's did. Similarly, deviations into lighter material are handled in an atmospheric, Acid Bath style, evident on the pleasant 'Rise River Rise' and 'Crown of Thorns,' rather than sounding like an out-of-place country ballad. A great production job really fills out the sound, with bluesy solos and memorable riffs making for an album that wasn't exactly worth the five-year wait (or nine years, if you're pessimistic), but is still one of the better stoner rock albums of recent years.
