Nirvana's most mature album (In Utero - Nirvana)
Advantages: Unique and stunning Disadvantages: Albini's occasional indulgence Though nowhere near as popular as the huge 'Nevermind', 'In Utero' stands as a unique testament to both Cobain's mental state and Nirvana's musical evolution. This is also their most complete album musically, from the opening of 'Serve the Servants' it captivates your attention, and retains it. Every song on here, with the possible exception of 'Very Ape' shows how mature and confident they had become, though it may lack the raw melodic power of 'Nevermind'. I have never before or since heard a song that shocked as much as 'Scentless Apprentice' on first listening. I would write the same about 'Rape Me' and 'Tourettes' as well if they were earlier in the album. It retains the classic Nirvana combination of being both big and small- big enough to fill up a stadium, and small and intimate enough to listen to on your ipod. Cobain's lyrical ability really comes to the fore here. Some quick negatives: sometimes it seems overproduced, and the final track takes up a mammoth amount of space on your computer, when most of it is silence! Summary: If you haven't heard it, your first time will cetainly be an experiance |
