21st Century Breakdown - Green Day ... the fairly calamitous "American Idiot", Green Day had lost a fair amount of favour with me, and while I don t like the term "selling out", it felt as though their artistic integrity had gone down the pan, and eponymous single in particular I found rather irritating, and of course it betrays the sacred rule of "don t insult your audience". 21st Century Breakdown isn t really much better: a generic pop-rock album with a few moments of fizzle, but mostly it is quite bland. Much like their last album, this is a rock-opera of sorts, divided into three portions, yet in trying to be more stratified it has also become more generic and rote. Th... The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow ... have finally come to prominence after spending several years on the sidelines, becoming known to many with their cracking album "The Seldom Seen Kid", a moody and atmospheric album that shows a growth in the band, while keeping true to their roots at the same time. The album is very serene and rarely very frenetic at all; it takes its time with the songs, which will infuriate casual listeners but please those who are fans of the band or who like "easy listening". That said, it isn t all sweetness and light, though, and the ballad Mirrorball has plenty of soothing, almost haunting violin work that encompasses so many different feelings and emotio... Greatest Hits - Foo Fighters ... love the Foo Fighters; they might not be so smart, but they re fun and harmless rock, and this is a great collection of most of their best songs, with surprisingly few omissions. Here are my favourite tracks: All My Life = a big hit upon release, the song begins slowly and then gets intense at its chorus. The song reportedly has a hidden context about sexual gratification, and when listened to with that in mind, the song is a lot funnier. Best Of You = a great recent-period tune that is very emotive and combines some ballad-like slow vocals with their usual intensity. It s one of their more sensitive and smouldering songs.
