It was some years ago now that I was first introduced to Monsieur Jacques Brel by Mademoiselle Odile, my A level French teacher. She recorded a collection of songs on tape cassette and gave it to me with the idea that this might improve my French pronunciation and enhance my understanding of the spoken word. In Jacques Brel’s songs you can certainly hear every word beautifully pronounced with audacious clarity. Although I can’t say whether Brel’s lyrics contributed to an improvement in my French, (although I did get my A level eventually), his ‘chansons’ certainly struck a chord with me that still reverberates today.
