For me Ry works best with minimal accompaniment so that his instrumental talent is clearly visible. This is such a track and he demonstrates not only dexterity but excellent syncopation skills. His voice however, is rather exposed and he seems to run out of notes on the deeper singing parts.

In my continuing quest to replace my AWOL record collection, this week's replacement disc is Into the Purple Valley by Ry Cooder. Ry Cooder emerged form the 60's Frisco folk scene, forming Rising Sons with Taj Mahal and subsequently to establish himself as a highly regarded session guitarist and string instrumentalist working most notably with Captain Beefheart and the Rolling Stones. This album established him as an artist in his own right. I first spotted him in 1973 with a stunning performance of his slide guitar classic, Vigilante Man on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
