Advantages: Cry, Maybe THats what it takes, Yellow, Beautiful
Disadvantages: Some dud songs here and there
Boy, Fame Academy was a good series wasn't it? The two artists it created where exceptionally talented and i think Alex Parks is one of the most talented winners from these types of shows, right up there with Leona Lewis.
This debut record is aptly titled Introduction, as we see a introduction in the life of Alex Parks - this is a brilliant records combining some classic covers and some original material. The covers are original and they better the originals in my own opinion. The original songs are beautifully written and obviously where personal to Alex and they are also where emotive and great songs.
When i first heard Maybe That's What It Takes, i got shivers because it was so good - that chorus is haunting, the chorus is moving and emotive and it's delivered so well and showcases her fantastic vocal range and ability. Cry has a great chorus, i dont think it's the greatest song on this record though, i think it shouldn't have been a single because the verses has not much there. Dirty Pretty Words is a really good song that's different and firey - a good album track. A cover of John Lennon's Imagine is fantastic - i think she betters the original and it suits her really really well.
I actually think Not Your Average Kind Of Girl would have been a better name for the album - i think that sums up Alex very well, she is not your typical kind of girl but she is quite unique and different to let says at least four of the main members of Girls Aloud. I think the cover of Mad World, is haunting and i thought it was really emotionally delivered, i like the song anyway but of all the covers of that song i have heard this was better. Everybody Hurts, again another classic, and what a risk doing this one - getting this wrong could have drawn alot of critque for Alex but i think she brings a new depth to the song, she treats it like Maybe That's What It Takes really gently and slowly, she keeps the song up to pace and her delivery is very unique and clear like she really feels the song.
I thought Beautiful covers up Alex really well again, if only these songs where original for Alex - then we could give her complete credit, the chorus is the best part here. This is a example of a song suiting a artist perfectly. Feathers and Stones bored me a little, i didnt think they where as strong. Wandering Soul i think could have been a single and i think Over conscious is a great way to end a great debut record. Well Done on all counts!
