Leos Janacek has been a favourite of mine for many years and I encourage anyone who is unfamiliar with his work to give it several tries. His style is strange. The music is often very sweet, sometimes dissonant, often folksy, sometimes patchy. This is musical cubism. He builds melodies and passages from small repeated ideas (but he's not in any way a minimalist in the modern sense), ideas which are tossed around in a generally ecstatic manner. He is not one for understatement, if that's what you like. The operas are humanistic. Generally, there are no kings or queens, just ordianry (and then not so ordinary) people.
