José Carreras is probably known to most people as a member of the 3 Tenors, which while demonstrating some of his talent does not do him justice at all. The traditional tenor of days gone by such as Caruso or Gigli were limited to operatic performances because their training imposed diction which did not come across well in casual ballads, yet the modern tenor is far more versatile. In the operatic world José is quite rightly well acclaimed, although his performances do vary considerably depending on the style of opera chosen. Jose Carreras was born in Barclona in 1946.He was a singing prodigy at 6, and a world star in his twenties. Sadly in the summer of 1987 he took ill, and was diagnosed as having acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was given a one in ten chance of survival but was determined to survive. He underwent gruelling treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but his only chance was to have a bone marrow transplant. As no suitable donor could be found he travelled to Seattle and underwent pioneering treatment where his own bone marrow was removed , rejuvenated and injected back into his body.
