Advantages: rich vocal timbre, versatile performer
Disadvantages: unsuitable for harsh roles
José Carreras is probably known to most people as a member of the 3 Tenors, which while demonstrating some of his talent does not do him justice at all. The traditional tenor of days gone by such as Caruso or Gigli were limited to operatic performances because their training imposed diction which did not come across well in casual ballads, yet the modern tenor is far more versatile. In the operatic world José is quite rightly well acclaimed, although his performances do vary considerably depending on the style of opera chosen. He suits such roles as De Grieux in Manon Lescaut or Turridu in Cavalleria Rusticana. Sadly, some of his performances of Verdi fall short of the desired quality. Despite Italy being reputed as the home of tenors, his spanish origin is a great asset to him. The richness of his voice helps to maintain a mellow tone during the higher notes whereas many italians display far too much treble in the upper realm. For those to whom Opera does not appeal, José still offers a good deal of musical pleasure. His many recordings of traditional spanish songs and ballads are possibly some of his greatest work. All in all José Carreras is a complete and accomplished tenor whose music deserves a place in any collection.

- 03/05/02 "...fall short of the desired quality." What desired quality? Not really written with the non-opera fan in mind, which leaves me even more confused that I was before.
