Is there anyone who has not heard the muisc of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat? If you escaped the tv talent show then you surely cannot have escaped the wide range of school musicals that everyone seems to do. Based on the story of Joseph in the Old Testament, this early Andrew Lloyd Webber / Tim Rice composition has become a family hit. Songs such as "Any Dream Will Do" and "Close Every Door To Me" will always have you singing along with them.
THis version is from the Jason Donavan's stage production - indeed Jason then went on to have a number one hit with his version of "Any Dream Will Do". Having been fortunate to here an original version many years ago, this cd is much more jazzed up. The music is upbeat and introduces some new tunes into the production such as "Those Canaan Days". The music quality is as you would expect from a Lloyd Webber / Rice collaboration and Jason Donavon's voice is as clear as ever. For me, however, it is the narrator - Linzi Hateley - which rises above the rest - crystal clear.
If you love musicals and want a cd that you can sing along to - often without realising that you knew the tune - then this is the cd for you. I have used it so much that the plastic cover is broken - does that give you a sign?

My oh my, what a painstakingly long song list! Well this is one of two musicals composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber to be sung entirely throughout the musical, so when i point out that the songs tell the story, i'm not kidding.
This musical written originally as a prequal to "Jesus Christ Superstar" ; is set in Canaan, just a little bit before Jesus' time. In fact the story is based on a story from Genesis Chapter 39, However I doubt that any gosphel writer could have spawned this multi influenced;magestic musical worthy of a reality tv series.
With each song taking a different style of music, from pop to calypso but still returning each song to its theatre roots with big finishes and huge numbers.
Of course the cast deserves a bit of a mention, as a musical is nothing without it's performers!
There aren't many famous peopl in this line-up; Jason Donovan, known only for playing alongside Kylie Minogue in Neighbors and of course now for his sudden rise to pop stardom, Aubrey Woods who is a veteran west end actor, Linzi Hatley also veteran west end actor.
It is worth mentioning this was the second musical that Andrew Llyod Webber collaborated with lyrisist Tim Rice, the first again being Jesus Christ Superstar.
You know it's strange, in this musical; though it is set in biblical times from a biblical story, it is by no means religious, as there is no mention of God anywhere in the play, there are references to the bible in some songs and there are also references to Heaven but this just gives enough of a religious overview to enhance this slightly modified story.
I love this musical; so much so, i bought the sheet-music for i, I love the use of different styles of music brought with each song, the fact that act 2 ends on a song that is by all accounts very depressing which is a change from most musicals, then I just love because it was written by Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice;Who I belive are two of the greats when it comes to musicals. All the songs are show-stopping numbers worthy of a standing ovation;despite the fact that the melody on some songs are actually repeated throughout other songs.
Although I really despise Jason Donovan in this; So if you want a better person for the Job get the Donny Osmond version because it is WAY better (in my personal opinion) However that is probably the only negative thing i can really say about it, and call me bias if you wish but i firmly believe this one of the most majestic, stunning musicals of all time!
