Just Backward Of Square - Lowgold

'Beauty Dies Young' is a great song. There may be others on this album. And that is where the problem lies, the first half bores you so much that you can scarcely bare to sit through any more. I heard great things about Lowgold, and expected; even WANTED to like them, but i find their simplistic musical blueprint too soul-crushing. As I said, track 2 did stand out as a pleasant-enough-strumalong, but unfortunately no other tracks seem to aspire any higher. The singing and playing is profficient enough, but the songs themselves are woefully predictable. It was with a teary eye that I first heard Lowgold. They sounded so perfect, deriving from the blueprint for innovative guitar fused melody. After that, there was no turning back. Isn't it great that in a time of unprecedented amounts of appalling music doing the rounds, that bands as special as Lowgold can release gorgeous records like Just Backward of Square (JBOS). Surprisingly not all of the critics have lavished praise on Lowgold's debut even though it possesses a massive untapped potential.
