it s a great shame that N Nada Surf will only be remembered by the majority of people for there hit single popular which is featured here but is only one of the fine tracks on offer here. Were as popular is a fine song bristling with humor, irony and a kick ass chorus it is not at all representative of the rest of hi/low which is a mixed bag of original ideas and fine song writing topped with Mathew Caw s distinct vocals and lyrical styling For the real essence of Nada Surf you need to look to the Weezer esque pop styling of the the brilliant second single Tree house , the laid back pop of Zen Brain and the furious pop rock of album opener Deeper Well . I first saw N Nada Surf back in 1996 when their first album had just been released, and waited for years for them to make the inevitable breakthrough which I felt they deserved. They had various contractual issues which did not help, and I was beginning to fear the worst for them when they released this album which, whilst not catapulting them into the mainstream, certainly did a lot to help their popularity. The album starts in reflective mood with Blizzard of 77 , before launching into The Way you wear your Head , a much more upbeat, catchy numnber which is my favourite on the album. Nada Surf are best known for their mid 90 s slacker rock classic, Popular. But they don t sound anything like that. That was a one off. They re really an exceptionally talented melodic rock band, imagine a Semisonic with a rock edge if you will. This is their brand new album, and if I may say myself, it s a bit of a cracker! I d go so far as to say this is their most fully fleshed out and coherent album so far, since picking this up I ve barely removed it from my iPod/PC/Car.
