Roddy Bottum's keyboards continue to add great atmosphere without drawing too much attention to themselves. 'Ricochet' and 'Evidence' are both great and fairly accessible songs, the latter possessing a great chorus and a nice smooth, funk-inspired sound, while other songs such as 'The Gentle Art of Making Enemies,' 'Cuckoo for Caca' and 'Ugly in the Morning' bring back the angsty...more

Premium Review King For A Day Fool For A Lifetime - Faith No More: King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime (282 words)

Rating:

The departure of guitarist Jim Martin was a major blow for Faith No More, and the two albums released in his wake from an increasingly dissatisfied line-up don't hold up to the classics 'The Real Thing' and 'Angel Dust,' though 1995's 'King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime' still has the old charm. With its wildly eccentric mix of styles, this is the natural successor to 'Angel Dust,' but feels less natural and less inspired this time round. Trey Spruance's guitar work is forgettable, though fun in the funkier songs, and Mike Patton has rarely sounded this manic, which is really saying something. However I am impressed by the snappy beat and the complex bass lines that emerge and again become submerged within the music. Short and sweet, I'm not too keen on the more ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review King For A Day Fool For A Lifetime - Faith No More: The Gentle Art of Writing Amusing Titles (1344 words)
by - written on 26/07/01 (Very useful, 57 readings)
Rating:

1995 was a turbulent time for Faith No More. Having sacked previous guitarist Jim Martin it was the start of the revolving door syndrome for Faith No More guitarists, rumours were rife that vocalist Mike Patton was heading for pastures old to concentrate on Mr Bungle and indeed, that the entire band was going to call it a day. This coming off the back of an album ‘Angel Dust’ that their record company viewed as commercial suicide after the successful formula established on The Real Thing and to top it all off, they half forgot they had a keyboard player on this, their hardest of albums. Despite, or maybe because, of all this strife, King For A Day is ...  Read the complete review
