Advantages: Modern worship, good beat, first internationally successful example of Christian Rock
Disadvantages: Some of the tracks are a bit vague, music is starting to sound a bit dated
King of Fools was Delirious? first album. It was released in 1998 and for this reason some of the tracks sound a bit dated. A fair bit of the backing is electronic and distorted. However the guitar and drums really carry through, and the vocals are extremely powerful.
Listening to these songs in the background you could get quite a way through the album before realising this is a Christian band. However reading the lyrics there is a clear Christian message here. I wouldn't go so far as to say they will appeal to non-Christians anyway, however Delirious? do deliver a good mix of indie guitar thrashing alongside a Christian message. The second song on the album, 'Deeper' was the first song by an openly Christian band with a Christian message to make it into the UK top 40. This song is about love for God, searching, and wanting to take that love to a new level, but could just as easily be about love for a girlfriend or boyfriend.
The packaging is funky and a bit different, and shows that just because they are Christians that doesn't mean they are boring.
My favourite song of the album is without doubt History Maker; this is a really powerful track that I think is a fantastic piece of worship. As one of the first pieces of modern Christian music I ever heard the lyrics have really stuck with me. The message is clear, and it is very inspiring to live by that message.
Unfortunately many of the other tracks on the album seem to blur into one another, and are not forceful enough to grab my attention.
Delirious? are important as the biggest Christian rock band. They began over 10 years ago, and have recently embarked on their farewell tour in order to spend more time with their families. This is where Christian Rock began, and is important for that reason alone.
Our pastor was preaching this week on brining worship into your day to day lives, instead of listening to Radio 1 stick on a praise CD or a copy of a previous sermon. I think Delirious? have fantastically combined praise with a modern, upbeat style of music and in the process have created some real Christian anthems.
Summary: Great early Christian rock
