Break out the fiddles and do a little jig!
This is a great little folk album from Yorkshire born Eliza Carthy. This is her second solo album. Her music has been recognised by some pres-teen figures in the music industry. She even makes and appearance on Billy Brag and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue and she's been nominated for a Mercury Music Price twice but both times she missed out.
The music itself is extremely jovial and the fiddle playing is sublime. Fast runs that never border on pretentious but reside in the realms of natural. That's the key word. Natural is how the album feels. You feel out in the open whilst listening. Sat at a summer fate with everyone dressed like pilgrims of the middle-ages...almost. The music itself sounds extremely Irish as comes with most fiddle based music. The strange thing for the Yorkshire singer is that her voice has an Irish lilt to it.
This is definitely an album to put on when you don't want to offend anyone with your Avant-garde tastes like F**k Buttons or something. It's hard to find people who actually genuinely hate this album. Some say it's not their 'thing', but they end up bobbing around to it anyway. The down side is the album runs dry relatively quickly.
I guess there's only so much fiddle to handle.
Summary: A little folk gem from a Yorkshire lady
