in the lyrics. Atmospheric sound effects, stabs of synthesised brass and washes of lush keyboard textures give these songs an almost three-dimensional quality. At the heart of Prefab Sprout is, and has always been, Paddy McAloon. You could be forgiven for thinking he chose the band name to make his own seem less odd. It allegedly came from a mishearing of the line 'hotter than a peppered sprout' in the Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazlewood song 'Jackson'. McAloon's songs draw strongly on such pop history for their references. Many of his songs carry on a continuing dialogue with God, with whom Paddy seems to have a robust critical relationship.
