It was inevitable that after a quiet year last year, The Kooks would return fresh in 2008 with a new album. The four piece from Brighton have undergone a personnel change in that time but it doesn't seem to have altered their focus while they have been away. Of course any new album would be closely examined under a microscope after the success of the debut album Inside In Inside Out in 2006. The hype prior to the release of this second album even seen it named most anticipated album on Zane Lowe's radio 1 show. It was going to be a lot of expectation to life up to and the question was would The Kooks be up to it? After my first couple of listens to the album I ... Read the complete review

I realised I hadn't done a music review for quite some time and so decided to go for a change and attempt another one! The latest CD I've acquired is "Konk" which is the second album from Brighton based indie band The Kooks. Their first album was released back in 2006 and was a major hit with the UK audience and saw several high entries into the charts. "Konk" was released on the 14th April 2008 and promises not to disappoint... "See the Sun" is the opening track and is quite a calming and mellow opening to the album. Towards the chorus the track does liven up quite considerably with some fabulous guitar beats to lift the mood. ... Read the complete review

No inside in/inside out, but still a good album with plenty going for it. I mean, how were they going to beat the debut album that had everyone lost for words? This is a decent follow up, considering the amount of bands that just fail to produce to a high quality the fans expect according to their first album. The first time i listened to it, i wasnt very impressed, but i think if you listen to this in the right frame of mind, its a real grower. Definately dont listen to it expecting their old stuff, they have changed, we have changed, everything has changed. They have a much more rockier feel to the album, making sure they cater for all the fans of the leading ... Read the complete review

Konk is The Kooks' ridiculously catchy second album, and looks to become a staple in the world of the Indie Rock/Pop genre. Luke Pritchard's vocals are addictive and refreshingly different to the incessant, bland rubbish we hear all to often in this genre. The Kooks have kept their integrity intact by keeping to their Brighton-boy roots; with the southern accents only helping the album more. The album is full of catchy guitar riffs and melodies that will be stuck in your head for days. That said, there are still definite remenants of the albums softer predecessor "Inside In/Inside Out", which will keep old fans happy as well as appeal to a new ... Read the complete review

This album was no more, no less than what I expected the Kooks to come back with following 'Inside In/Inside Out', which was sweet in so many words, with a few good, solid catchy pop tracks which were sure hits. Konk cannot be described as anything other than 'OK', which in my mind, is the last thing that a band has in THEIR mind as their aim when sat down producing and recording their material. There are a few of these 'ok' tracks, including 'Always Where I Need To Be', 'Shine On', 'Sway' and 'Do You Wanna', but they have nothing on the hits from 'Inside In/Inside Out'. The album shows little progress, development & growth on the band's part, if any at ... Read the complete review
